19 years ago (2003) We reported Princes William and Harry hit back at former royal butler Paul Burrell for his “cold betrayal” of their mother.

In a statement William – speaking for the pair – showed their deep pain at Burrell’s revelations. Princess Diana would have been “mortified” if she were still alive, they said.

“We cannot believe Paul, who was entrusted with so much, could abuse his trust in such a cold and overt betrayal.”

98 years ago (1924) The “Zinoviev letter” was published in a national newspaper four days before the general election. The letter was apparently penned in Moscow by Grigory Zinoviev, head of Communist International, and called on British communists to engage in disruptive activities.

It was later revealed to be a fake and was blamed by the Labour Party for the Tory landslide.

58 years ago (1964) Zambia gained independence from Britain in a ceremony in the capital Lusaka. New President Dr Kenneth Kaunda nationalised the mining industry, which was the mainstay of the country’s economy.

He ruled until 1991.
