On 16th February 1923, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his team entered the burial chamber of King Tutankhamun.
The Pharaoh’s sarcophagus was made of solid gold. Other treasures in the chamber included gold statues and jewellery.
There were also some unusual items such as loaves of bread, linen shirts and even a trumpet.

King Tut’s remains had been undisturbed for more than 3000 years.
However, Carter’s team got more than they bargained for when they opened this treasure tomb.
The curse
Not long after, mysterious events started to occur which had many fearing that the mummy had cursed the men, and their loved ones, who had disturbed the Egyptian king’s slumber.
Although unharmed himself, Carter returned home to England to find that his pet canary had been eaten by a cobra.

The fifth Earl of Carnarvon had financed Carter’s expedition.
By 5th April 1923, nearly two months after opening the tomb with his friend, Lord Carnarvon was dead.
An infected mosquito bite on his cheek caused blood poisoning.
There was a rumour that King Tut’s body had had a lesion in the exact same spot!
Apparently, at the exact moment that Lord Carnavon passed away, his dog howled uncontrollably and died.

Carter had gifted his friend, Sir Bruce Ingham, a paperweight.
This was in fact a mummified hand that wore a bracelet with the inscription:
Cursed be he who moves my body. To him shall come fire, water and pestilence.
Ingham’s house burned down not long afterwards. Then, the attempts to rebuild were hit by a flood.
The house of Aaron Ember (an American Egyptologist present when the tomb was opened) also burned to the ground, with perishing Ember inside.
There was a rumour that he had had time to escape with his family but insisted on saving the manuscript that he was working on, which was entitled Egyptian Book of the Dead.

Other apparent victims of the curse included Carnarvon’s half-brother, Carnarvon’s personal secretary, the radiologist who x-rayed the mummy and an American financier who had visited the tomb.
