Prevent ‘biggest’ cause of ageing to keep skin ‘radiant and youthful’

Laura Capewell, founder of Arella Beauty, explained how the right diet and products can do wonders for the skin. She also highlighted how stress is one of the biggest factors when it comes to increasing the signs of ageing on the skin.

“Prevention really is better than cure when it comes to reducing signs of ageing, so it is vital everyone protects their skin and nourishes their bodies from within,” Laura said.

“There are plenty of simple, cost-effective lifestyle choices that have a beneficial impact in the longer term.

“One of the biggest factors that increases the signs of ageing is stress, as it affects skin hydration and causes inflammatory signals to be released.”

Reducing stress can be difficult, but Laura recommended “ensuring you’re getting plenty of quality sleep each night to help your skin cells repair and regenerate”.

“Also ensure your skin isn’t dehydrated by drinking two litres of water daily and using a moisturiser to help maintain your skin’s barrier,” she added.

There is no need to buy an expensive moisturiser as, Laura explained, “many moisturisers from high-street brands contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to reduce water loss”.

As for diet, the food one consumes is just as important as the products one uses.

Laura said: “Life can be very fast-paced which causes stress on the body, so maintaining a healthy diet is of vital importance to overall wellbeing.

“In many cases, diet is even more important than products.

“Vitamin C is an antioxidant which protects the skin from free radicals and sun damage, as well as reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

“It is a hero ingredient so look out for moisturisers containing Vitamin C and consider a nutrition supplement if you aren’t getting enough from food sources like tomato juice, oranges, kiwi, and strawberries.”

Lastly, Laura explained how to reduce dark circles under the eyes – with age, the skin naturally loses collagen and grows thinner, so it is inevitable the skin around the eyes will start to thin and show veins and discolouration.

“As we already know, exposure to the sun speeds up the process of collagen breaking down, so consistently using SPF and avoiding sun exposure can reduce dark circles,” Laura said.

“Topical products like a cold compress, eye cream, rose water, and an eye massager also keep the eye area hydrated and promote blood flow to keep the skin plump.”
