Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 96. Her funeral will likely be attended by all royals including Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, and their children. Here are the rules the parents have to follow when it comes to their children attending a public event like a funeral.

When a member of the British Royal Family dies, some protocols are followed for the funeral.

In addition to the senior royal members, the Queen’s great-grandchildren will also attend.

Kate and Prince William have three children together, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Meghan and Prince Harry have two children together, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

In the past, young children have not traditionally attended royal funerals.

Lili and perhaps Archie might be seen as too young to attend.

Express.co.uk spoke to Tiffany Norris, founder of The Mummy Concierge about children attending family events like funerals.

Tiffany, who has previously worked for the Royal Family said: “When it comes to the royals, young children have not traditionally attended royal funerals in the past. But this doesn’t mean that won’t change.

“If a child is close to the family member who has died, their parents might decide whether it’s a good idea or not for the child to attend the funeral.

“If the child is at an age when they can understand what has happened, then parents may feel that attending the funeral is the ‘right’ thing to do.

“There is no hard and fast rule – it depends completely on whose funeral it is, what the child is like (will it upset them more to attend) and what decision their parent feels is best for both the funeral and the child,” she added.

Whether there is an age limit to a child attending a funeral, Tiffany explained: “I would suggest that anyone under the age of four is too young to attend, and understand a funeral, however, the decision needs to be ultimately made by the parent.

“If your son/daughter was close to the deceased you might find it a good idea to talk to them about what a funeral is so that they understand.

“Then you can decide together whether it’s a good idea to go or not.”

To ensure a child behaves at a family event like a funeral, Tiffany added: “Talk to them about the event in advance so that they know what to expect.

“Outline certain behaviours you would like them to adhere to, for example, ‘you must sit quietly’ in advance.

“It might also be a nice idea to have a ‘reward jar’ or similar to honour good behaviour. You can explain that if they behave well, they will get given a star for their good behaviour.”

If any royal children do attend, it is likely they will follow the same rules as the rest of the royals.

All members of the Royal Family will be required to dress in black following the Queen’s passing being announced, as per tradition.

The royal children will also be required to dress in black when attending the funeral.
