The idyllic seaside town of Cabot Cove served as the fictional New England setting for popular TV series Murder She Wrote, starring Angela Lansbury as amateur detective Jessica Fletcher.

In fact, the filming actually took place in Mendocino, California, with a Victorian bed and breakfast on the corner of Ford and Little Lake Street serving as Fletcher’s home.

The property’s owner Grover Wickersham described the cast and crew as ‘friendly and casual.’ He added: ‘It was common to see Angela Lansbury stop to speak with a toddler, or for Tom Bosley to sign his autograph on a Glad Bag box, proudly presented by a shopper, stepping out of the local grocery store.

While many movies have been filmed in and around the picturesque town of Mendocino, few have left behind such lasting feelings of endearments.

‘Universal Studios broadcasted 264 episodes of Murder She Wrote between September, 1984 and May, 1996. Local residents looked forward to the filming, as over a hundred and fifty were chosen to play background parts. A lucky few were cast for speaking roles,’ he said.

Fletcher’s home Blair House is still owned by the Wickershams, and it remains a bed and breakfast with rooms starting from $200 a night. Realtors say for a five-bedroom property similar to Fletcher’s in Maine where she supposedly lived, the price tag would be about $700,000.

It was handpicked by the production team behind the 1990 flick, which starred Macaulay Culkin as a boy who cleverly fends off a pair of burglars when his parents jet off to spend Christmas in Paris – accidentally leaving him behind.

The façade of the red-brick property features in the film, along with the kitchen, the attic (where Kevin is sent to spend the night in the opening scenes), the first-floor landing, the main staircase, and the basement. However, a replica of the house interior was built in the gymnasium in the nearby New Trier Township High School, as the house was too small to accommodate the crew for certain scenes.

Originally built in the 1920s, the home was owned by John and Cynthia Abendshien when Home Alone was made. The couple paid $875,000 for the 4,250-square-foot redbrick colonial in 1988. In 2011, the couple listed the property for $2.4 million, but they received far less than their asking price. It was then sold for $1.58 million in 2012 but the buyer was not identified.

A house similar to Kevin’s, complete with six bedrooms and five bathrooms, would cost an estimated $3.5 million today.
