Rihanna’s Super Bowl interpreter goes viral as viewers hail ‘iconic’ high-energy signing

Rihanna gave an unforgettable performance at the Super Bowl, and even announced her second pregnancy, but there was another woman who garnered lots of attention.

The sign language interpreter put on a show of her own, while signing the songs for any viewers who needed her assistance.

Appearing on American TV channel Fox, the ASL interpreter, who is called Justina Miles, was praised for her high-energy translations and her obvious enjoyment of the hit songs.

Fans took to Twitter to praise Justina's interpreting. "Rihanna’s sign language interpreter deserves a raise she was giving it her all," said one person.

Another added: "Rihanna’s interpreter is the real #Superbowl MVP".

The praise continued with: "I really wish this ASL interpreter got some national airtime during Rihanna's Halftime performance… SHE IS GETTING HER LIFE, LITERALLY ATE AND LEFT ZERO CRUMBS!!!!! What is her NAME?!"

Her performance is being widely shared on Instagram and TikTok, with one video reaching over 5 million views and 1.3 million likes (and counting!).

In the clip, the clearly talented Justina is performing to B***h better have my money, using expressive faces, miming along to the words and dancing whilst keeping perfectly in time to Rihanna's performance, and of course signing.

At a press conference before the Super Bowl Justina spoke about the honour of being the first female deaf performer for the Super Bowl’s halftime show.

Justina, 20, said: “I value the opportunity to make it possible for all deaf people to enjoy these songs, and not have them miss out on the full Super Bowl experience.”

According to CNBC before the game began, Justina also made history as the first deaf person to perform the ASL rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing".

She signed while Sheryl Lee Ralph song ahead of the game between Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in Arizona.

Speaking on the opportunity she said it is "not only for me to share this experience with the whole world," before adding that it will bring "empowerment to millions and millions of Black deaf people all over the country who’ve never really seen that before. I feel that is truly lifting every voice, even my voice."

Justina is a pretty impressive woman – she's currently studying to be a nurse, and recently won a silver medal as part of the 4×100 women’s track relay team as part of the USA team at the Deaflympics in Brazil.
