A boat believed to be the luxury vessel that sank after catching fire while on the water near St Kilda has been recovered by divers.

Police divers discovered the boat about 11 metres underwater in Port Phillip Bay, and its remains were salvaged on Thursday.

The vessel is thought to be the remains of a 13-metre luxury boat that sunk on May 24 after it caught fire, prompting its two passengers to jump ship.

A 61-year-old man from Neerim South and a 59-year-old man from Merricks abandoned the boat about three kilometres out from the St Kilda shoreline when they failed to trigger its fire-suppression system.

The men were rescued from the water by army personnel who heard their distress call while training nearby.

Early investigations indicated the fire could have been sparked by a mechanical issue, as the two men reported smoke billowing from the boat’s engine room.

Water Police Squad Inspector James Dalton previously said the men were lucky the boat didn’t explode while they were aboard.

Police divers inspected the submerged remains of a sunken vessel last Friday.

A private contractor salvaged the vessel on Thursday afternoon.

Detectives continue to investigate the fire. So far, they are not treating it as suspicious.
