Looking younger isn’t all about skincare, and the right haircut can lift and contour the face perfectly. Hairdresser Carolyn Newman spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about how women can “take away the years”.

Carolyn’s first tip for looking younger was to think carefully about hair colour.

The colours that may suit you in your 20s, 30s and 40s may be the ones causing you to look a little drab in your 50s, 60s and 70s.

Carolyn explained: “In terms of colour, I would always suggest a shade or two lighter if you want to take away the years.

“Most women will suit a lighter shade as they mature.”

The expert revealed that “extremely dark hair” can be “harsh” on older skin tones and in turn, “much more ageing”.

Indeed, according to Medline Plus: “With ageing, the outer skin layer (epidermis) thins, even though the number of cell layers remains unchanged.

“The number of pigment-containing cells (melanocytes) decreases. The remaining melanocytes increase in size.”

The result is that “ageing skin looks thinner, paler, and clear (translucent)”.

Consequently, the rich chocolate or striking black tones that suited you when you were younger may now start to wash out your skin.

According to Carolyn, block colours can have the same effect, so she suggested opting for a “multi-tonal colour”.

This use of several couples, coupled with highlights around the face, can help “blend the greys”.

It will result in a much softer look and “take years off in an instant”.

When you’ve got the colour sorted, Carolyn recommended moving on to cut and style.

She said: “When it comes to the haircut and styling, aim for a softer and more textured cut.”

In many ways, this is an instant – and much cheaper than the real thing – facelift.

It can also “create body to give a more youthful look”, rather than hanging limp and lifeless.

Carolyn continued: “There is a common misconception that mature clients should always opt for shorter hair.

“I believe it’s about feeling confident and attractive and if that means having long hair then don’t opt for a chop!

“It is imperative to invest in quality, anti-ageing products to keep hair looking younger, healthier, and more manageable for their day-to-day styling.

“With a good cut, fabulous colour, good condition, and the right tools, long hair can be perfectly manageable and beautiful.”
