Supermarkets are constantly changing and updating their branches to keep up with customer demands and shopping habits, and Tesco is no exception. The supermarket giant is making a major change to its self-checkout service in a move that will affect all customers.

Tesco has introduced more self-checkouts to its stores in recent years.

Today, the supermarket is making a change to its system that will affect all customers who use self-checkout machines.

The food retailer will be asking shoppers to answer an extra question when using the self-scan tills.

As well as the regular questions, the supermarket will be asking customers – before making their payment – if they would like to round up their total amount to the nearest pound.

This money will then be used by Tesco to help support an in-store fundraising campaign for three of the UK’s leading health charities. The campaign is called “Helping you to live healthier”.

The change is being brought in nationwide, but will only last until October 3.

The charities are Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation, and Diabetes UK.

As well to funds being raised, the campaign aims to increase awareness about the importance of making healthier lifestyle choices, which will in turn help people to lower their chances of getting cancer, diabetes, and heart and circulatory diseases.

Oonagh Turnbull, head of health campaigns at Tesco, said: “The funds raised will continue to support the health of UK communities at such a critical time.

“Our health charity partners rely on donations to continue their awareness, prevention and research work.”

Michelle Mitchell, chief executive at Cancer Research UK, added: “We’d like to thank everyone who supports the important work we all do through this campaign, and we’re grateful for the generosity of shoppers up and down the country.

“Campaigns like ‘Helping you to live healthier’ are a great way to raise money, and to encourage people to make healthier choices that lead to healthier lifestyles.

“Every penny raised matters. We don’t take a single donation for granted.”

Britons have taken to social media this morning to express their opinions on Tesco’s self-checkout system update.

Some have also shared what they think about self-checkouts in general, with certain individuals saying they rather go to a manned till than a self-scan machine.

David Stanley wrote: “That’s me finished shopping at Tesco. Seems some supermarkets hate senior citizens who have arthritis. Their loss.”

Twitter user @alwarren77 said: “As if food shopping isn’t stressful enough my local @tesco extra now has no staff on checkouts, the whole thing is self-checkout, absolutely ridiculous, trying to do a weekly shop for a family of five is practically impossible, won’t be going there again.”

User @microsoftfan_ commented: “@Tesco not enough tills. Too many self-scan. Putting people out of jobs. Boycott self-checkout.”

Jay wrote: “@Tesco worst experience ever at the self-scan trolley shop! This causes nothing but frustration. Bring back checkout staff!”

Another shopper shared a photo of a long queue of people waiting to get to the tills at one of Tesco’s stores. They added: “Hey @tesco. Why don’t you reverse your strategy of the transference of responsibility and manage the self-checkout tills better and put more people on the regular tills? Terrible experience in your stores.”
