Viewers of Open House: The Great Sex Experiment branded the show’s therapist ‘incompetent’ and accused her of ‘pushing’ a struggling couple into having a threesome.

Tom, 35, and Natalie, 32, from Yorkshire, have been together since they were 18 and have been married for 12 years.

The couple entered the reality series – which involves staying at a luxury retreat with other singletons – in an attempt to open up their relationship to other people.

Ahead of the experiment, the mother-of-two said: ‘The wildest sexual experience I had […] was a five-some with four boys for my 17th birthday.’

Joking about his lack of experience in comparison, Tom said: ‘I’ve had sex with my wife… that’s about as interesting as mine has been.’

After arriving at the luxury retreat, the couple attended a social with other residents – where they met Josh, 28, and Holly, 25 – who are already in an open relationship.

Later that evening, the couples retreated to the villa’s hot tubs and ended up kissing each other’s partners.

But when Holly tried to make things go further with Tom, Natalie called time on the evening –  saying that ‘there had been so much to take in’.

Holly said afterwards: ‘When I was sat on Tom, I could definitely feel his hands trying to explore a bit further. I think he was definitely into it.’

What’s more, Tom then told his wife: ‘I could have gone further tonight I think, with Holly.’

‘I’m not sure how that makes me feel,’ Natalie replied. ‘It hurts.’

Back in the room, Natalie told her husband: ‘I just feel like, you knew I felt like the vibe wasn’t there. I just sort of feel like you could just do it with anyone now.’

In response, Tom said: ‘I wouldn’t want to take anything further without you being involved.’

Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey is overseeing the television experiment – which encourages couples to explore open relationships

The following day, the couple had a session with Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey – who is overseeing the experiment.

Breaking down in tears, Natalie – who was cheated on by previous partners – opened up about her fear that her husband would have a sexual experience with another woman without her.

Offering the couple advice, Dr Bisbey said: ‘The biggest challenge in opening up your relationship is about how you feel about you.’

Urging the couple to keep pursuing their dream of a threesome, the expert then set them ‘homework’ for the day – which involved ‘flirting ‘ and ‘edging’.

She added: ‘You’re going to have a better time if your passion level is high.’

Viewers were stunned by Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey’s advice to the couple and felt like they weren’t ready to take the next step

However, the advice left viewers of the show outraged – who felt Natalie and Tom shouldn’t have continued with the experiment.

One said: ‘Any therapist worth their salt shouldn’t be pushing a couple into this considering how badly it’s gone so far.’

Another fumed: ‘The therapist on this programme is about as competent as the relationship experts on Married at First Sight!’

A third said: ‘I really don’t understand this programme. If you are in a relationship and are supposed to be in love, why on earth would you want to go on this programme It’ll all end in tears… trust me.’

What’s more, a fourth said: ‘I mean, fair play to them no judgement from me but I couldn’t do it on telly.

‘And I always worry that the participants’ kids will see it one day. And we all know how kind kids can be at school…’

A clearly unhappy Natalie shut down the interaction and said that ‘there had been so much to take in’

Later in the episode, Natalie and Tom fulfilled their fantasy of introducing a third person into the bedroom when they met single resident Precious.

Precious said afterwards: ‘I had a good time, it was really really fun and they’re such an amazing couple.

‘They’re so genuine and so sweet and so easy to get along with.’

What’s more, Natalie added: ‘That’s how I wanted it to be. I didn’t feel jealous or anything.

‘I never imagined it would go that far, it was amazing.’

The programme sees couple at the sex ‘retreat’, under the guidance of a psychologist, assessed to establish how ‘ready’ they are to try an open relationship as they’re introduced to a group of singletons.

Participants are then given a series of escalating tasks, each pushing them slightly further than the last towards actually having sex with someone other than their partner.

Last week’s show saw the daily evening party for residents descending into a 15-person orgy – sparking outrage among viewers.

However the sex expert has insisted she ‘wasn’t shocked’ by the scenes, telling DailyStar: ‘I’ve been working with folks for 35 years, helping them to create the relationships with amazing and varied sex – not much shocks me.’
