The Underworld movie franchise came out in five parts from 2003 to 2016. Beckinsale transformed herself into an action figure for the vampire-slaying werewolf character, Selena. A cult classic, the action/horror film franchise earned $553 million at the global box office. According to Vox, the basic plot of the vampire vs. werewolf universe is inspired by another classic, The Matrix. Surprisingly the cost of filming the entire franchise is estimated at $200 million, which is a lot less budget than the smashing returns it recorded at the ticket counters.

7 Pearl Harbor ($449 Million)

 

According to EW, the war epic based on actual events from World War II debuted in the top 2 on the 2001 Memorial day weekend, racking in $75.1 million. The film, directed by Michael Bay, starred Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett. Despite being heavily criticized in the film circles, the war theme clicked with the audience, and the movie grossed $449 million at the global box office. It is now counted among the top-three highest-grossing live-action features by the Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group.

6 Van Helsing ($300 Million)

 

After the success of the Underworld franchise, Kate can be seen reprising her role as a vampire/demon slayer in the horror/action flick. The cast, directed by Stephen Sommers, included the original Wolverine Hugh Jackman, Richard Roxburgh, and Robbie Coltrane.

According to Movie Web, Universal Pictures had long-term plans of creating an epic franchise with this Bram Stoker’s Dracula-inspired adventure/action but backtracked due to box office failure. The planned sequel never happened despite collecting a massive $300 million at the global box office and $120 million at the domestic box office. Universal Pictures had even paid for the sequel’s original Transylvania sets in the hopes of returning to film, but the project was scrapped at the last moment.

Directed by Frank Coraci, the comedy starring Adam Sandler and Christopher Walken and Kate became a sleeper success at the global box office in 2006. It collected an estimated $240 million worldwide. During the opening weekend, the rib-tickling futuristic comedy debuted at number one at the domestic box office with approximately $40 million in ticket sales.

4 The Aviator ($214 Million)

 

Based on Howard Huges: The Secret Life, the film was directed by legendary Martin Scorsese and starred Academy Award winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett. According to Mental Floss, the film’s biopic plot revolves around the remarkable tycoon Howard Hughes and is set in the 1920s. Kate replaced Gwyneth Paltrow, originally chosen to play Ava Gardner in the film. It was well received by the critics and won two Best Picture awards, a Golden Globe and Bafta, respectively. The film collected an estimated $214 million at the global box office.

3 Total Recall ($198.5 Million)

 

The sci-fi/action flick directed by Len Wisemen also starred Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel in pivotal roles. The film made $9 million on its opening day and grossed approximately $25 million during the first weekend at the domestic box office. It went on to earn an estimated $198.5 million worldwide.

2 Contraband ($96.3 Million)

 

The adult thriller nabbed the box office title with an estimated $24.1 million in US and Canada during its opening weekend in 2012. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur, the action flick starred Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, and Giovanni Ribsi. The film grossed an estimated $96.3 million at the global box office.

1 Serendipity ($77 Million)

 

The romantic film directed by Peter Chelsom was released in 2001. The film also starred John Cusack, Jeremy Piven, and Bridget Moynahan. The plot revolves around a fate-related love story between a British woman and a man residing in the States. The two rely on luck to meet again after falling in love once earlier. The quirky Christmas comedy won over the audience, collecting an estimated $50 million at the domestic box office while making $77 million worldwide.

Kate Beckinsale has established herself as an action figure rather than a romantic girl next door. Her films have earned her an estimated $25 million net worth.
