Summer is in the air, meaning holidaymakers are gearing up to book their long-awaited holidays in the sun.

However Britons heading away this summer, are being sent major warnings over a notorious Greek restaurant where you may be charged exorbitant prices for what some call ‘snacks’.

DK Oyster in Mykonos, Greece, has suffered a string of complaints from outraged tourists who say they were overcharged for their meals and drinks.

And although the oyster bar boasts the ‘ultimate luxury experience’, several people received the shock of their lives when presented with the bill.

From a pair of honeymooners who say they were charged £25 per oyster, to a couple who paid almost £700 for drinks, appetisers and a salad – people can’t help but feel fleeced.

Alex (pictured left)and Lindsay Breen (pictured right), from Toronto Canada, both 31, have warned other tourists about dining at notorious restaurant DK Oyster, in Greece

The couple say they were charged almost £350 (400 Euros) for a beer, a cocktail and a dozen oysters

The Breens were unexpectedly set back by 407 Euros/£346 after what they called a ‘quick snack’ of two drinks and oysters

One furious couple sounded the alarm after being slapped with an exorbitant bill for a ‘quick snack’ and some drinks.

Alex and Lindsay Breen, from Toronto Canada, were supposed to be having the time of their lives while on honeymoon in Mykonos, Greece in May last year.

However, the couple, both 31, were soon living a nightmare when DK Oyster charged them almost £350 (400 Euros) for a beer, a cocktail and a dozen oysters.

The Breens claim that restaurant staff failed to give them a drinks menu with prices on it before shocking them with the astronomical sum.

They also accused the ill-famed restaurant of taking them to a back room to pay, rather than presenting them with the bill at the table.

It is not the first time the DK Oyster bar has caught tourists unaware – with negative reviews and previous complaints

Lindsay, a recruiter, said the drinks they were served were ‘comically large’ in size

She also said her husband was taken to a ‘back room’ to pay the bill, and when he requested a breakdown, the words were written in Greek

And when they quizzed staff for a breakdown, they were shown a computer screen which was all in Greek.

Lindsay said: ‘We went to the oyster bar for a bite to eat and a drink.

‘They immediately said “do you want oysters?” They were very presumptuous. We said “yes” and he said “a dozen?” so we said “yes” because a dozen is a typical order.

‘My husband ordered a beer and I asked for a cocktail menu and he came back with the beer.

‘I had to ask again for a cocktail menu and he started rhyming off different kinds of alcohol he had like vodka and gin but I asked for a menu. I didn’t know why it was so difficult to see what they had.’

Lindsay adds that she ordered an Aperol Spritz as the drinks menu didn’t list the brands of alcohol they sold

The couple were blissfully wedded in Italy last year, and at the time of the ordeal were supposed to be enjoying their honeymoon

The headhunter explained that when she finally received the cocktail menu, it was nothing more than a laminated piece of paper with the types of alcohol they sold.

She requested an Aperol Spritz which was served ‘comically large’ in size and once they’d finished their order, were pressured to order crab legs and desserts.

She added: ‘When we’d finished the oysters, he was trying to get us to have crab legs and thank goodness we didn’t.

‘He said “you know what would go really nice with these oysters? Crab legs. Shall I get some over for you guys?” and we said “no”, we just wanted a quick snack and a drink.’

She then revealed that her husband’s trip to the toilet unearthed a mind blowing turn of event.

She continued: ‘My husband went to the toilet and when he came back he said he thought he’d seen a menu inside that said it was 29 Euros per oyster and I said there’s no way.’

‘We had already eaten the oysters so we thought ‘oh God, what are we getting ourselves into with this bill?’

The notorious DK Oyster Bar by Platis Gialos beach has become notorious as a tourist trap

‘The guy came back with a huge trolley of desserts and he says “so of course we’re having cake today” and starts putting different desserts on our table and we said we didn’t want them.

‘He started getting offended that we didn’t want to take them so I can see how people would be pressured to take more.’

The honeymooners described the following events as ‘sketchy’.

She added: ‘When we were ready to leave, I went to the washroom and they had my husband go into a back room to pay which is sketchy.

‘They gave him the bill which was over 400 Euros. He was shocked and asked for a breakdown.

‘They had a computer screen that they turned to him and it was all in Greek but we don’t speak Greek.

‘He got a sketchy vibe from them and didn’t want to get himself in a bad situation so he ended up paying it.

‘He definitely felt intimidated and he’s the friendliest guy so even if the bill was double he probably would have paid it to avoid any problems.

‘It was pretty crazy. I’m glad in hindsight that we didn’t cause an argument or refuse to pay because it could have ended up worse for us. They know when you’re tourists they take advantage.

‘When I met him out front, I was in disbelief. I could not believe it. In Canadian dollars it’s over 600 dollars. It’s so crazy to pay that for a snack.’

DK Oyster bar owner Dimitrios Kalamaras hit back at the couple, branding the claims an outright lie

Lindsay and Alex were blissfully wedded in Italy last year, and were celebrating their nuptials by travelling around Europe for three weeks.

They were only in Mykonos for one more night and were due to fly to Athens before heading back to Canada.

Dimitrios Kalamaras, owner of DK Oyster, has hit back at the couple, branding the claims an outright lie. He said: ‘Unfortunately, all of us who work in the hospitality sector have been approached by notorious ‘influencers’ who instead of making their living by advertising products and services to their audience they put pressure on certain businesses for exorbitant fees and free meals.

‘In DK Oyster we have advertised in the ways we consider suitable for our restaurant and we will not succumb to the influencers who have been attracted to the beautiful island of Mykonos.

‘A very popular destination for the people that certain influencers would very much like to mingle with.

‘This person who is trying to get famous through Instagram posts under the name of Lyndsay Breen, starts with a lie.

‘She claims that she “repeatedly asked for a cocktail menu”, and adds that “the server didn’t seem to want to provide one.”

‘Despite that, she placed an order. An influencer, an experienced well traveller person who makes a living through their experiences in the world did what most adults in the right mind would not do, ordered drinks and food from a waiter who refused to present a menu.

‘This false claim has been used so much against our restaurant by dozens of anonymous users in Trip Advisor, that we decided to place three huge black boards by the entrance of the restaurant displaying the menu and the prices.’

‘We believe that the value of the offered experience is high and we have no intention to explain why we charge more than a supermarket or a traditional taverna, which can be quite wonderful but is surely a completely different concept than ours.’

However, it seems this tale barely scratches the surface.

Jessica Yarnall, 31, and Adam Hagaun, 30, were slapped with an eye-watering $860 bill after a meal and drinks at a notorious Mykonos restaurant

They ordered four crabs legs, a Greek salad and a mojito each and were shocked at the extortionate bill

Just recently, an American couple were slapped with an eye-watering $860 bill (£692) for two mojitos, four crab legs and a salad – which the owners of DK Oyster have since defended.

Jessica Yarnall, 31, and Adam Hagaun, 30, from Montana, say they believed the cocktails to be $27 each when they ordered at the oyster bar by Platys Gialos beach.

When they challenged the bill, they claim staff produced a ‘shot glass’ drink that they said was an example of the $26.80 mojito and informed them that their mojitos were different ones, at $107 per drink.

The menu made it appear like it was $40 for a crab leg but in reality it was $40 for a gram of crab leg with a minimum amount to place an order.

It is not the first time the restaurant has caught tourists unaware. Alex and Lindsey Breen, 40, from Canada, were staggered to be hit with a $410 bill after they went in for a ‘quick snack’ on their honeymoon in May.

These rip-off scandals follow an investigation by DailyMail.com last year, as the team went inside the beach bar to find that foreigners were charged $18 per oyster and hundreds for a drink.

Locals were found to pay just a fraction of the price while staff members laughed about ripping off unsuspecting tourists.

A local shop worker who ordered in Greek was told that he could have six oysters for just $30 – and at $5 per oyster it’s nearly a quarter of the $18 per oyster foreign holidaymakers have had to pay.

Hair stylist Jessica says she was left in disbelief at the shocking sum but said staff insisted that they paid up so they settled the bill in cash and left.

Jessica and construction worker Adam had spent two years saving for the trip and travelled to Athens, Mykonos and Santorini in May 2022 before flying home to Montana, USA.

She emphasized that they had only sat down to eat because the menu made it seem like it was affordable.

Jessica said: ‘There were waiters outside trying to get people in. They asked if we wanted to eat and we said we’d get one drink.

‘I’d asked for a menu with prices to make sure it was in our price range. The menu made it seem like a really affordable place to eat.

‘We sat down and talked about whether to eat or not. They were very pushy. We thought maybe that’s how it is and we didn’t want to be rude.

‘We asked what was good and they said crab legs and a Greek salad so we said ‘ok let us think about it’ then they brought out bread rolls.

‘We told them we didn’t order anything yet and they said we had. There was a little bit of a language barrier so we think when we said we’d think about it he thought we meant yes so when we were trying to work out how much it was going to cost they started bringing out the food and they said we definitely ordered this.

Greek shop worker Costas, 32, carried out a test to see whether locals would be charged the same prices at the notoriously expensive bar

‘It was a forceful moment where we didn’t want to be weird about it but we were also trying to relax. We didn’t want to get into an argument with a server.

‘When he walked away, I asked my boyfriend if he was alright eating it and he said yes, I told him it would probably be a little bit expensive and he said we should just do it.

‘I thought worst case scenario it would be $300. We were expecting it to be a little more expensive but not as much as it was with the quality of the food.

‘Adam got the bill and said “it’s bad”. It was over €800 and I thought “absolutely not” so I went to the manager and said I was really confused and wanted to see an itemized bill.’

When discussing the bill, Jessica says she Googled their menu and showed it said $25 for a mojito but her bill said €100.

Jessica said: ‘It looked like €38 for a crab leg, it was €38 for a gram of crab leg and there’s a minimum you have to order.

‘He came to the bar and slammed down a shot glass and said “that’s a €25 mojito, you ordered a €100 mojito” and I told him I did not and that I wasn’t given choices.

‘They charged €100 for the grossest mojito, the mint wasn’t nice. It was disgusting.

‘He said we were paying the bill. He didn’t want to have a conversation. They said we had to pay the bill.

‘We were so taken aback that we thought we’d pay the damn bill and get out of there. We were super upset.’
