Good Morning Britain viewers were left fuming as comedian Mike McClean argued that adults should be banned from keeping teddy bears on their beds.

The comedian, from Manchester, took part in a fierce debate with broadcaster Emma Burnell on the live ITV show this morning.

Hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard quizzed the pair on the topic of teddy bears after Love Island contestant Molly Marsh took her favourite soft toy into the villa.

Kicking off the debate, Susanna read out a letter from GMB viewer Claire – who keeps one of her grandmother’s old teddy bears on her beds.

She wrote: ‘He was sprayed with her perfume and whenever I snuggle him and give him a good ol’ snuffle, my nanny is with me.’

In response, Mike brutally responded: ‘Claire, grow up. Take the bear off the bed.

‘Listen, if I want to see a bear, it’s in the woods and it better be having a picnic. That’s the only time I want to see a bear.

Shocked by Mike’s response to the poignant letter, Susanna accused him of being ‘heartless’.

Digging his heels in further, the comedian said: ‘A photograph reminds you of your grandmother, your memories remind you of your grandmother.

‘You don’t need a stuffed animal to remind you of your grandmother.’

However, Emma argued that many adults – herself included – sleep better when they have their childhood toy in bed with them.

She said: ‘Frankly, the way things are at the moment – anything that helps you sleep is a good thing.’

Addressing Mike directly, she said: ‘I’m never going to force you to have a bear – but if you try to force me not to, then we’re going to have words!’

The Good Morning Britain debate sparked lively discussion among viewers on Twitter – with the majority opposing Mike’s viewpoint

Later in the debate, Mike said it’s an absolute ‘dealbreaker’ for him if the woman he is dating owns teddy bears.

He said: ‘If you took me back to yours and I saw loads of teddy bears on your bed, I’m getting an Uber straight out of there.’

The comedian then asked: ‘What’s next? Will you get your dummy out?’

Emma then hit back and said: ‘Anyone who is that much of a snowflake that they can’t handle being in a bed with me and one teddy bear is not worthy of my bed!

The segment sparked lively debate on Twitter – with the majority of viewers taking Emma’s side of the argument.

However, others did admit that they would also be put off by a person they were dating owning teddy bears

One replied: ‘I don’t think that guy needs to worry about a woman having a teddy bear in bed because with his attitude, he won’t make it past the front door. Grade A t***.

‘Frankly, it’s pathetic if someone can’t handle having a teddy. Get a f***ing grip.’

Another added: ‘What an absolute t***. His whole demeanour screams a******. Who gives a damn if someone has a teddy on their bed. Idiot.’

A third raged: ‘Oh get a grip. Some fragile dude getting offended by teddy bears.

‘I don’t care if people sleep with a life-sized cuddly giraffe. If it helps you sleep and get comfortable…’

‘I do have a teddy bear  on my bed and I cuddle him if I have a bad dream,’ a forth said. ‘I don’t care what anyone else thinks.’

Taking Mike’s side of the debate, a fifth said: ‘If I was single and went back to someone’s place and saw a pile of teddy bears on their bed… I’d RUN and never look back!’

‘I agree that adults taking a teddy bear to bed are a bit odd,’ a sixth said. ‘Bit like those grown adults that love Disney films.’

During the debate, Susanna and Ben referred to a recent study which found one third of UK adults sleep with a teddy bear in their bed.

Meanwhile, a GMB poll also found that 67 per cent of viewers opposed Mike’s argument that adults should be banned from having teddy bears.

Emma told Mike: ‘If one third of adults have a bear on their bed and you’re cutting them out, that’s a hell of a dating pool you’re missing out on.’
