Who is Gemma Owen’s ‘love interest’ Bugzy Malone amid new ‘romance’ with Love Island star

Love Island star Gemma Owen has reportedly coupled up with Grime artist Bugzy Malone.

The 32-year-old rapper and the 19-year-old dressage rider, who is the daughter of footballer Michael Owen, have enjoyed several dates together, despite their 13-year age gap.

Their romance comes just two months after Gemma's split from Love Island co-star, Luca Bish.

Personal life

Bugzy, whose real name is Aaron Davis, grew up in Crumpsall, Manchester and had a difficult start in life having grown up in poverty-stricken household, where members of his family were working as career criminals.

The rapper then became embroiled in criminal activities at just 11 years old, eventually ending up in prison aged 16.

He received the nickname "Bugz" from a gang he was in when he was 13 years old, before developing into "Bugzy Malone" when he was serving his prison sentence.

After leaving prison at 17, he took up boxing in an a attempt to distract himself from the life of crime. He also began to take music seriously as a side hobby to his then-growing boxing career.

Music and film career

After releasing his first mixtape in 2010, the star began doing freestyles for the YouTube channels KODH TV and Grime Daily, before going on to release his second mixtape Why So Serious in 2011.

The lead single from album Hip Hop Heavy Metal was released in September 2011, with the video going on to garner an impressive 1.5million views on YouTube.

He lists his biggest inspiration as Tupac Shakur. The Guardian has called Bugzy a trendsetter for Manchester's urban music scene, mainly its grime scene where he was the first Manchester grime artist to reach national commercial success

Bugzy went on to release more mixtapes over the years including Lost in Meanwhile City and Journal of an Evil Genius, before his Spitfire freestyle on JDZmedia garnered him popularity outside his native Manchester.

His first official track, Watch Your Mouth, was released in June 2015, which had immense popularity and was played on several UK radio stations.

Bugzy's first charting single Through The Night with DJ Luck and MC Neat, was released in May 2017 and reached number 92 in the UK single's chart.

Since then, Bugzy's career has continued to grow with his third album, King of the North, boasting three charting singles and reaching number four in the UK album charts.

Bugzy's latest album The Resurrection reached an impressive number four in the charts, with the rap star also going on to play Glastonbury in 2019.

He has also branched out into acting and recently appeared alongside Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza and Hugh Grant in Guy Ritchie movie, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.

Alongside pictures from the premiere this week in Dubai, Bugzy wrote on Instagram: "As youngsters we would sit wondering how we would ever make a living, and when I say we would watch #Snatch by @guyritchie we would watch it on repeat because just by the way the story was told we felt as if he understood us.

"Hard to put into words how blessed and grateful I feel to feature in #OperationFortune alongside the likes of @jasonstatham and @plazadeaubrey beating up bad guys.

"It's ironic because now i'm using my talent to demonstrate to people that also started at rock bottom that all you need is a dream and the balls to march towards it."

Bugzy has also appeared in another Guy Ritchie film, appearing as character Ernie in 2019's The Gentleman.

Alongside music and acting, he also partners with Supply & Demand for a fashion line, with their products selling at JD Sports.

Legal issues

On September 14 2021, Bugzy appeared in court after being charged with two counts of wounding to inflict grievous bodily harm after two intruders broke into his home. He was cleared of the charges after the jury accepted he was acting in self defence.

Writing on Instagram at the time, he said: "WE GOT NOT GUILTY ON BOTH COUNTS!

"Where i’m from we are brought up to protect our homes and our loved ones.

"Quick thank you to my legal team for your solid work, also the Judge for your fairness and the Jury for your attention to detail.

"Also my tailor @forbes.tailoring for this hand made, John Gotti, pin stripe, three piece suit…"

Previous relationships

Bugzy is very secretive about his dating life.

He never publicly revealed the name of his ex-fiancée, who he proposed to in 2019 after nine years of dating.

He got down on one knee during a romantic boat trip to Paris in which he got down on one knee amid a boat trip on the River Siene.

However, it was recently speculated that they'd split as the engagement video and all other traces of the woman in question has been deleted from his Instagram account.

It comes as The Sun reports: "Gemma and Aaron have enjoyed a few dates over the past few weeks.

"They have told their closest friends they are dating and seem really happy together. Gemma and Aaron are keeping their relationship out of the public eye for now because it is early days.

"He is really into her and has made it clear how he feels. It is all very new and exciting for both of them but they are taking it slowly."
