A woman has divided opinion after saying she feels uncomfortable in a Spanish hotel room because the toilet door has gaps around it – and has insisted she now doesn’t want to ‘do her business’ while her husband is in earshot.
Taking to parenting forum Mumsnet, the anonymous user, who is thought to be UK-based, shared a photo of her hotel bathroom door, with space around every side.
She expressed her reluctance to use the toilet whilst her husband was only in the room next door, and asked if she was being unreasonable.
Her post gained a lot of responses and whilst many people expressed surprise that she wasn’t comfortable doing her business in front of her husband, there were some who were sympathetic and shared why they wouldn’t use it either.

She expressed her reluctance to use the toilet whilst her husband was only in the room next door, and asked if she was being unreasonable
She wrote: ‘Staying seven nights with DH [dear husband] in a four star hotel in Mallorca, Spain. We may be married but I don’t feel comfortable with doing my business in this toilet while he is in the room.
‘There is a gap on every side of the door and it does not close completely. Is this a standard setup in hotels in Spain or do you think I’m not being unreasonable and it’s very odd?’
One person responded: ‘Fairly sure your DH won’t be staring through the crack in the door trying to watch you pee.’
Whilst another user posted: ‘Ffs op really? You’re married and you can’t go to the bathroom. I have [inflammatory bowel disease], now that’s a problem and my partner is amazing. Honestly, I can’t see the issue.’
A third said: ‘How have you got as far as being married whilst being so concerned about things like this?’, and another added: ‘You are married for goodness sake. I’m sure he won’t spy on you having a wee.’
A number of respondents said that they didn’t understand why a married couple would be uncomfortable using the toilet in front of each other and reassured the woman that her husband would not be spying on her
Someone else posted: ‘Yeah also don’t see the issue, sorry. Maybe we are less usual but neither of us cares if the door is open, sure they won’t be watching.’
However, there were some sympathetic users who looked further into the issue.
One posted: ‘I have IBS and used to have similar concerns about sounds etc. But luckily I have a farty DP who has made me feel so relaxed. Ask him to put some music on or something. It is a bit like announcing the arrival of your poo but it might help you relax.’
A second user said: ‘Been in loads of ‘trendy’ hotels abroad where the en suite is all glass. Don’t get it – I don’t want to see or hear anybody in the bathroom – ‘toilet’ is not a thing I want to share with my DH or best friend.’
Other users shared sympathy for the woman and gave reasons as to why they would also feel uncomfortable in a similar situation. One person admitted to kicking up a fuss at work about an exposing bathroom door
Yet a few users tried to make light of the situation with one commenting that at US hotels, guests can make eye contact with people on the toilet
‘We had a bathroom in Majorca which was separated from the main room by a clear glass wall. The toilet was tucked into an alcove but was visible from parts of the room. Wasn’t impressed. I like privacy in the bathroom!’ added a third.
There was also a handful of people who saw the funny side of the issue.
‘I genuinely thought you were in a Premier Inn in Stoke that has frosted glass swing doors for the bathrooms… Personally, I think YANBU, but it seems others disagree with our sensitivities. Good luck, OP!’ commented one user.
And another added: ‘I thought you meant the toilets for all hotel guests. Don’t go to the US that’s what all public toilets are like. Can literally make eye contact with someone on the throne. Plus there’s a huge gap at the bottom of the doors.’
