Barbarians is coming back to Netflix on October 21 and the German historical drama is based on real events. There will be six episodes arriving on the streaming platform, following the Germanic tribes and their feud with the Romans. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about where the series is filmed and set.
Where is Barbarians filmed and set?
The second series is set a year after the Varus Battle and the Roman troops have returned to Germania.
The first season retold the events that led up to the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, which took place in 9 AD.
Filming began on season two back in September 2021, with the cameras rolling Krakow, Poland, and its surrounding areas.
At the time, executive producer Andreas Bareiss of Gaumont said: “After the Varus Battle was fought, we really trusted in being able to continue the thrilling story around Arminius, Thusnelda and Folkwin.
“Now we are all the more happy to send our heroes on another adventurous journey of love, friendship and betrayal. Adventures that couldn’t be more emotional and exciting.”
Krakow is the second-largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland and it has been used as the backdrop for a number of projects.
Steven Spielberg’s World War II drama Bridge of Spies and Claire Denis’ High Life starring Robert Pattinson chose Poland as a filming location.
Thusnelda actress Jeanne Goursaud is on Instagram and she shared some official photography from the second season.
One of the shots showed an intense battle scene, with Thusnelda slaying a Roman soldier.
Star Laurence Rupp also shared a photo of himself with newcomer Murathan Muslu back in July this year.
Referencing the pair filming together, he said: “What a friend to have! Got a poster from @murathanmuslu when we were on the road in Krakow about a year ago. Good times! Especially because of you too!”
He too shared some photos of himself in battle scenes for season two, during filming in Poland, saying: “Time to kick a** again. Battleweek starts. But this time – Barbarianstyle.”

Actor David Schütter has also been keeping his fans up to date with the filming experience.
He announced the start of filming with the message: “We rather die on our feet than live on our knees.”
Showrunner Stefan Ruzowitzky had said at the time filming began: “I am really happy to be part of the continuation of this great series and looking forward to the cooperation with the entire team in front of and behind the camera.
“We were able to win further great actors and actresses over whose characters enrich the narrative density of Barbarians even more.”
The series, made up of 45-minute episodes, welcomes a number of new faces this time around.
Robert Maaser is joining the cast as Odvulf, with Murathan Muslu as Maroboduus the Marcomanni King.
Andrea Garofalo stars as Aulus, with Katharina Heyer, Alessandro Fella and Cynthia Micas also joining.
Barbarians airs on Netflix on October 21.
