During Monday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain, the LBC presenter fumed over the decision to apprehend somebody due to their thoughts on the monarchy. Andrew Marr called it “outrageous” as he stated the country is democratic.

On Sunday afternoon, a woman held up a sign sharing her strong views on the monarchy moments before the proclamation of King Charles III.

Her sign read: “F*** imperialism, abolish the monarchy.”

It wasn’t long before police officers took the woman away for her protest which resulted in the crowd applauding their actions.

It was later revealed the 22-year-old had been arrested “in connection with a breach of the peace”.

Speaking to GMB hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard, Andrew condemned the arrest and stated the new monarch would be alarmed and upset by the action.

Touching on the arrests, Andrew said: “I think that is outrageous. We are a democratic country.

“We are an open disputatious country where we can say what is on our minds and I don’t believe for a moment that this is what the new king would have wanted.

“In fact, I would bet a lot of money that the new King is equally alarmed and upset by the fact that protestors are being arrested.”

Agreeing, Ben commented the new monarch enjoys having debates with people with opposing views to himself.

Andrew then called King Charles III a clever and open-minded man.

He said: “I think he’d want his reign to start with a discussion.

“How a constitutional monarchy fits into this democracy.”

After hearing Andrew’s comments on the ITV show, many viewers took to Twitter to praise the LBC presenter for highlighting the woman’s arrest.

Jim Tough said: “At last someone saying the arrest of protesters who are against the idea of the monarchy is a disgrace. Andrew Marr on @GMB.”

“Fair play to Andrew Marr highlighting how alarming it is for protestors to have been arrested yesterday. #GMB” added Leanne O’Connor.

With Louise S adding: “Andrew Marr on @GMB stating he thinks it’s outrageous that protesters are being arrested for having abolished the monarchy because we live in a democracy. Is the most refreshing thing I’ve heard. We do at the moment still have the right to free speech.

Monday will see the new King visit Westminster Hall in London with the Queen Consort for the first time in his new reign following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

It was announced on Thursday afternoon last week the long-serving monarch had died at Balmoral Castle at the age of 96-year-old.

The ceremony, which is known as the presentation of addresses, will see both Houses of Parliament express their condolences to the King and his wife.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am.
