On Thursday’s episode of Lorraine, the late Barbara Windsor’s husband Scott Mitchell joined the show to speak about his new book on their relationship. During their chat, the 59-year-old confessed that he was hit with backlash when he first got with the EastEnders star as people called him a golddigger. However, he admitted that many weren’t aware that she was in £1million debt.

Scott first got together with the iconic Peggy Mitchell actress back in 1992 when she was in her 50s and he was in his 20s.

They later married in 2000 and stayed together for twenty years after their wedding until her death in 2020.

Speaking about their romance on the ITV Lorraine show, she commented on the amount of stick he received when they first got together because of the huge age gap.

She said: “Everybody was like, ‘oh what’s he after?’ There was all of that that you had to put up with, it was awful, terrible!”

He replied: “At first you know, a lot of people called me a golddigger. What they didn’t know behind the scenes was Barbra had £1million debt.

“I was saying to her, don’t worry you’ll come and live in my flat in East Finchley, yet people were saying ‘He’s after her money!’

“It was kind of quite hard to take, but of course, there was nothing I could say at that time.”

During their chat, Lorraine interjected to confirm the huge debt the actor was in was “no fault of her own”, to which Scott agreed.
