BBC host says viewers can ‘see through fake’ following Phillip and Holly ‘feud’

Roger Johnson on Holly & Phil: Fans can spot fake chemistry

Over the past few days, there have been reports that Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby are not as close as they once were.

Rumours of a rift between them started after Phillip confessed things haven’t been easy for them recently along with Holly deleting a tribute to him in her Twitter bio.

Although they continued with their hosting duties over the past week, This Morning viewers were quick to notice an awkward tension as many called their facade “fake”.

On Sunday afternoon, the 61-year-old announced on social media that he’d be stepping down from the show with immediate effect after two decades.

Touching on his exit with TV critic Scott Bryan, BBC Breakfast host Roger Johnson highlighted viewers can see through a friendship that’s no longer authentic.

As Scott told Roger how This Morning thrives on a friendly and upbeat relationship, he mentioned the viral moments that’s happened between Holly and Phillip over the past few years.

Roger said: “That affection was genuine between them, wasn’t it? You could tell it was built on a really genuine friendship.”

Agreeing, Scott revealed that the moment their relationship started to unravel, viewers started to tune into the show for the wrong reasons.

He said: “When viewers start to become sceptical of a relationship on-screen, whether a friendship on-screen is actually authentic, it’s very hard to convince them otherwise.”

In regards to This Morning’s future, it’s currently not known who will be stepping into Phillip’s role alongside Holly as she takes an early break from the show and will return on June 5.

Speaking about possible replacements, the TV critic confessed the chemistry between two people hosting together has to be authentic.

He said: “Trying to have that (authenticity) on one of the most popular daytime shows and have that match the longevity and the success it’s had with Phillip Schofield over the past few years, is certainly going to be a hard thing to pull off.”

Agreeing, Roger said: “Yeah the viewers are smart you know. They can see through fake, can’t they? As you say.

Phillip started hosting This Morning back in 2002 with Holly joining him seven years later in 2009.

Since then, the pair have been side-by-side on the show for 13 years and often referred to one another as their “bestfriend”.

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
