Pop culture obsessed physicist Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons) quickly became one of TV’s most recognisable characters after his introduction to the sitcom world in 2007. Now The Big Bang Theory has come to an end, a detailed look behind-the-scenes has exposed some of the biggest secrets behind the hit CBS comedy.
Sheldon star Jim has revealed a throwaway gag from the first-ever episode of The Big Bang Theory, which was later removed from syndication.
In the show’s pilot, Sheldon and his roommate Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) decide to visit a sperm bank and make a donation.
However, when the episode was rerun in later years on CBS, the scene is missing.
After over a decade on screens, fans now realise their visit to the sperm bank doesn’t gel with the Sheldon they now know and love.
Even when he meets and starts dating fellow scientist Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), Sheldon is the least sexually aware of The Big Bang Theory’s core group.
In complete contrast to Sheldon’s characterisation in future seasons, his trip to the sperm bank would imply he had at least some semblance of sexual experience at the start of the series.
Looking back over a decade later, Jim revealed he understands why producer Chuck Lorre decided to remove the scene.
“At the time, the sperm bank scene didn’t bother me,” he said.
“Looking back, it was out of place, but there was no way for the producers to know.”
Several interviews with the cast members have shed more light on the show’s production in Jessica Radloff’s book The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.
As the series went on, Sheldon and his friends’ personalities became much more fleshed out, and it became clear not everything about their initial introduction would stick.
“Nobody knew who Sheldon was yet, so the live audience accepted it for what it was,” he explained.

“But it is confusing information now, and I get why Chuck took it out of syndication because the episode is much stronger and more special without it.”
For those who have been watching the series since its inception, The Big Bang Theory’s pilot holds a special place for fans as the first glimpse of the sitcom’s beloved main characters.
Now Sheldon and Leonard’s now-baffling sperm bank trip has been removed from reruns, the episode is now much more in line with the gang of geeks viewers have watched over the years.
Despite his clear love for the character, many members of the show’s cast admitted they were surprised when Jim made the call to exit the series after 12 seasons.
“I just disagreed with how it was handled,” Johnny admitted in the book.
“We thought we were going into [co-creator] Chuck [Lorre]’s office to talk about renegotiating, and then Chuck tossed the baton to Jim. And Jim was shocked and obviously caught off guard.”
Thankfully, the cast reconciled after the messy negotiations, and the series concluded after 12 seasons with a fitting series finale in 2019.
The Big Bang Theory seasons 1-12 are available to stream on Netflix.
