Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Unrivaled at Box Office in Its Second Week
The ‘Black Panther’ sequel still rules the domestic chart despite a 63 percent decline from its debut weekend, while ‘Bones and All’ opens to a solid per screen average of $24,000.
AceShowbiz -“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” can’t be dethroned at box office. The latest Marvel superhero pic still reigns the North American chart on its second weekend, adding an estimated $67.3 million to its domestic gross.
The “Black Panther” sequel saw a 63% decline on its second weekend, which is not unusual for a blockbuster superhero movie. In fact, the Ryan Coogler-directed film holds better than any Marvel Cinematic Universe title released in the COVID-19 pandemic era in terms of its percentage drop.
Among all 30 MCU titles released in theaters over the past two decades, “Wakanda Forever” ranks No. 5 on the overall list of second-weekend drop. No. 1 on the last of biggest drops is “Black Widow“, which saw a 67.8% decline on its second weekend as it was made available simultaneously on Disney+ Premiere during its opening weekend in theaters in July 2021.
“Thor: Love and Thunder” held the second-biggest drop, declining 67.7% in July of this year. “Spider-Man: No Way Home“, which debuted to an astounding $360.1 million in December 2021, also saw a significant drop of 67.5 percent on its second weekend, ranking third on the overall list. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness“, which opened to $187.1 million in early May 2022, fell off 67.5% on its second weekend.
“Wakanda Forever” has so far grossed $287.99 million domestically and $258.3 million international to cross the $500 million mark globally ($546.3 million). It holds the record as the second biggest global opening of 2022 to date.
Following “Wakanda Forever” at No. 2 is newcomer “The Menu“, which debuts to an estimated $9 million from roughly 3,100 domestic theaters. The R-rated satire stars Ralph Fiennes as a vengeful celebrity chef, who prepares a lavish, though maybe a little stomach-churning, meal for a young couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) and other one-percenters.
The weekend’s biggest surprise comes from “The Chosen Season 3: Episode 1 & 2“, a crowdfunded streaming series about the life of Jesus. The first two episodes of the third season collected approximately $8.2 million from 2,009 theaters.
“Black Adam” plunges from No. 2 to No. 4 with an estimated $4.5 million, as “Ticket to Paradise” also falls down two places to No. 5 with approximately $3.2 million.
Meanwhile, Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All” has a solid debut at specialty box office. The cannibal love story starring Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell raked in $120,000 for a $23,983 per-screen average after it opened in 5 theaters, before expanding nationwide on Wednesday, November 23. “I’m hoping over the Thanksgiving period, the audience has an appetite for it,” said UAR president Erik Lomis.
