After Freddie Mercury died in 1991, Queen worked on their final album featuring all four bandmates. Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon played their guitar, drums and bass to the singer’s posthumous recordings to create 1995’s Made In Heaven. But there’s still unreleased material out there.

During The Miracle album sessions in 1988, when Freddie had already been diagnosed with HIV but hadn’t made it public, the band recorded a song called Face It Alone that didn’t make it onto the 1989 album.

Earlier this year, Brian and Roger told BBC Radio 2: “Yes, we did find a little gem from Freddie, that we’d kind of forgotten about. And it was. It’s wonderful. Actually, it was real discovery. It’s from the Miracle Sessions.”

Brian shared: “It was kind of hiding in plain sight. We looked at it many times and thought, oh no, we can’t really rescue that. But in fact, we went in there again and our wonderful engineering team went, okay, we can do this and this. It’s like kind of stitching bits together.”

On what the unheard Freddie Mercury song sounds like, Brian added: “But it’s beautiful. It’s touching.” And Roger said: “It’s a very passionate piece.” Now the track is ready to launch this Thursday, with the Queen guitarist having shared the first tantalising snippet on social media.

Freddie can be heard singing: “In the end, in the end, you have to face it all alone.” Fans left their great enthusiasm in the comments.

Another added: “Sounding great hearing that beautiful voice of Freddie’s. Can’t wait until it’s released to hear. You & Roger had to be exci[ted] finding it & hearing his voice.”
