Britain’s Got Talent fans complain to OFCOM over Viggo Venn’s controversial win

Britain’s Got Talent fans couldn’t hide their disappointment on Sunday when comedian Viggo Venn scooped this year’s win, despite some stiff competition from several other acts. Over 100 fans were so unimpressed by the result in fact, that they contacted broadcasting regulator OFCOM to complain, despite the result being decided by a public vote on 4 June.

Norwegian performer Viggo controversially won the 2023 series of BGT after reportedly bagging just 22% of the public vote. According to OFCOM, around 116 viewers complained about the end result, while a further 100 viewers also complained about comments made by new judge Bruno Tonioli earlier in the week – including some instances of swearing.

The majority of the complaints were said to be about the final winner result, which shocked performer Viggo just as much as it did the viewing public, prompting him to admit "it wasn't his fault” in a baffling interview on ITV’s Lorraine. Hi-vis-wearing Viggo was visibly shocked after he was crowned the winner on Sunday evening, bagging himself £250,000 and a place on the Royal Variety Show as a result of the win.

The star managed to beat some strong contestants in the live final, including inspirational dancer Musa Motha – whose leg was amputated when he was just 11 years old, and opera singer Malakai Bayoh, who had previously been tipped as the favourite to win the show.

Speaking about his win on Wednesday, Viggo told Lorraine, he hadn’t actually wanted to win the competition. "I was kinda hoping I didn't win because it would be so embarrassing but I was very happy when they said it the British public have such sense of ridiculous humour," he admitted, while also confessing the final result "wasn't his fault".

Following the results announcement, the studio audience were clearly divided by the unexpected turn of events, with several fans even heard booing and jeering at the star, despite the public vote having chosen their winner. Taking to Twitter to vent their frustration, similar sentiments were echoed by viewers at home.

One fan tweeted: "Very surprised. But Viggo was very funny. Very distasteful for anyone to boo Viggo. Not his fault he won, people voted for him, not anyone else. Made it a sour end thanks to the audience reaction. Well done, Viggo!!! #BritainsGotTalent #BGT2023 #bgt."

While another added: "Sounded like a lot of boos there when #ViggoVenn was announced as the winner of #BritainsGotTalent. I thought he was great but a shock omissions from the final 3, and I think everyone thought the young lad would win. Bit of a deflated, down-beat end to the series #BGT2023 #BGT.”

Meanwhile a third soon commented, "NEVER EVER EVER EVER watching @BGT #BritainsGotTalent again. Absolute shambles!! A guy running about in a high vis vest over so much proper genuine real talent? the boos in that audience, shocked faces and genuine tears said it all for me!! SHAMBLES.”

Bruno Tonioli meanwhile attracted ire for his “inappropriate” comments during a semi-final show on 30 May. After watching a performance from dancers Nathan and Joanne his feedback included: "In control… firing on all cylinders… kicking and flicking.”

The former Strictly Come Dancing judge then continued: ”You naughty boy you went under her legs and you had a good peek didn't you? I love your naughty attitude. You don't care. You go for it! Fun for us all. Thank you my darling.”

Viewers at home were mortified by the comments, with several demanding Bruno apologise for the clearly “inappropriate” remarks. One viewer said: "Did Bruno just say, 'You went between her legs and had a good peep' not sure that's appropriate."

Another tweeted: "That comment from Bruno was completely inappropriate about that young lad dancing and going under his partners legs. He should apologise."

A third fan wrote: "#BGT I can't believe Bruno said he looked up her dress!!!! Got to say that's an awful thing to say to the lad.”

69 OFCOM complaints resulted from the incident alone, with several more complaints also following two incidents of swearing by Bruno during the semi-final week.
