Britain’s Got Talent star Amanda Holden reveals Bruno Tonioli has his own secret talent

Britain's Got Talent star Amanda Holden has revealed that Bruno Tonioli is not just the ITV talent show’s new judge – he’s also their interpreter!

Strictly Come Dancing legend Bruno has replaced David Walliams and joins Amanda, Alesha Dixon and Simon Cowell on the judging panel, bringing an exciting new vibe.

Not least his ability to speak several languages on top of his native Italian and his second language English.

Amanda says, “He's got loads of energy, like putting a Berocca into water and watching it fizz! He gives some good critiques when he's not messing around and being naughty! I swear we need to strap him to his chair, he never sits down! He's a sweetheart and very informed those are the bits that I'm finding really interesting about him! I think he's still bringing all the energy and character that he had on Strictly, but you get to see more of him because obviously now he’s judging more than just dancing. He also speaks several languages, So it’s been great having him translate for some of our international acts. It’s like having our own BGT interpreter on call every day!”

What can viewers expect from auditions this year?

It feels more homegrown. It feels like stuff people would be doing in their bedrooms and less professionals this year, but the standard is still exceptionally high. Last year, we had a lot of people who had struggled professionally because of lockdown. A lot of people that needed to remind themselves and their audience that they could do it. And it was great for us to be able to give them that platform after what had been a very tough time for performers. But this year, I think it's evened out again and it's back to more amateur, homegrown, people queuing up and coming in. So I’ve really enjoyed seeing that!

How would you rate the standard?

Even though I say it’s more amateurs giving it a go, the standard is still really high. For the first time in a long time I have absolutely no idea who might win, it really could be anyone.

Have you seen a theme emerge during auditions?

Yeah, we’ve had a lot of choirs this year, more than ever before, I think. I really want a choir to win this year. There’s a men’s choir which are just brilliant. I enjoyed the fact that they were a group of men who were coming on for a good singsong. After 16 series you must have seen it all, so what does it take for an act to impress you? I think it has to be authenticity because I can see through everything. It's helpful when they're a decent person or a humble person, or they don't really realise what they have. So it's authenticity and humbleness. That's the thing for me, that's what pulls at me, I think, "God, that's amazing because they're not quite sure if they are good or not.” So it’s as much about the actual person as it is about their act, if that makes sense?

Bruno has joined the panel this year, how did you all welcome him into the BGT family?

We treated him like anyone else that would have joined. We’re nice people! And professional. He is a lovely man. I've known him for years, so it's not like I didn't know him, and of course he’s been friends with Simon for years so he just fell into place. I think Simon feels very relaxed to have him on the panel. So the whole atmosphere is quite light, bubbly, and easy.

Are you looking forward to the live shows?

Yeah, what I love when the live shows go out is, even when we deliberate and we choose the acts, I never like to know who's on which night. The only time I ever see the line-up is just before the doors pull apart and we walk on stage as a four. That's the only time I see who's on that night because I don't like to be prepared in any way. That's the best way to be. Simon and I were talking about that the other day and he completely agrees, to be utterly unprepared and just react in the moment.
