CALL The Midwife's Olly Rix hints exit after the series was renewed up to 2026.

The actor – who plays newlywed Matthew Aylward – teased his character may not be sticking around after the show aired their epic and emotional season finale.

The Call the Midwife season finale saw Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George) finally get her happy ever after.

The blonde beauty walked down the aisle and said “I do” to her beau Matthew.

Despite their happy ending, the actor alluded to exiting the show, although not through choice.

He said: “I don’t know if the show wants me until 2026. They might not want to go there. I don’t know.

However, tragedy struck when she was diagnosed with, and later died from, leukaemia.

Widowed and a single father he rebuilt his life with the help of Trixie, who had been his late wife’s midwife.

This comes after Leonie Elliott, who plays Lucille Robinson on the show, confirmed she will not be returning to the series following her character's heartbreaking battle with depression after a miscarriage.

The actress has quit after six years on the medical drama.

While actress Leonie is yet to make her own statement about leaving Call The Midwife, she did post a statement ahead of season 12's episode two, where Lucille and on-screen husband Cyrill headed to Jamaica for some time away with family.

At the time, Lucille was struggling mentally after her miscarriage, which was only made worse by the couple's difficulty to conceive, and a rise in racial tension in east London.

While Nonnatus House nurses have always been widely accepting, Enoch Powell's 1968 "rivers of blood" speech criticising mass immigration stirred the community the nuns serve, leaving Lucille in a difficult to handle situation.

Amid the scenes airing, Leonie posted on Instagram: "This season was incredibly difficult to film. Thank you for all your kind words. It’s my hope for people watching that if they can see the good in her, maybe they can extend that to people in real life.

"I care about her deeply. Many share her story of miscarriage and depression, and many share her experience of abuse, racial or otherwise.

"Many of us face mental health challenges, I hope we can continue to love one another, support and listen to each other.

"Look after yourselves and each other."

In season 13, Cyrill will be returning to Poplar by himself, and will remain there. What happens to Lucille is yet to be revealed.

Call The Midwife is currently filming season 13, with two more seasons also being confirmed by the BBC. This confirms the show's position on the channel through to 2026.

Series creator Heidi Thomas said of the renewal: "Call the Midwife is the pride and joy of all who work on it, but it's our fantastic, loyal audience that matters most," she said.
