Channel 4 fans ‘complain to Ofcom’ after Gregg Wallace eats ‘human meat’

Gregg Wallace sparked outrage among Channel 4 viewers on Monday night, with many threatening to “complain to Ofcom”.

The show titled Miracle Meat saw Gregg investigating a controversial new lab-grown meat product that its makers claimed could provide a solution to the cost-of-living crisis.

Opening the programme, Gregg began: “The cost-of-living crisis is hitting Britain hard with food prices rising at the fastest rate in 40 years.

“But now a new line of affordable protein is hitting our shelves… this is engineered human meat.

“That’s right, a protein made from human cells that promises to be cheaper and tastier than any of its competitors.”

He continued: “I’m Gregg Wallace, and I’m off to visit Good Harvest where a whopping six tonnes of human meat is engineered every day.

“With the promise of cheap meat for all, it may well be the meaty miracle we need to ease the squeeze of the cost of living.”

However, fans took to social media in droves to share their disgust over the Channel 4 programme. Many claimed to “switch off”, while others said they “felt sick” while watching.

@RussCollibobs complained: “I’m not sure that #miraclemeat will have done @GreggAWallace any favours careerwise. Maybe set a new record for Ofcom complaints. My wife wanted it switched off after 5 mins, I imagine a lot did the same & didn’t realise it was satire (which became more obvs as it went on).” (sic)

@Olivia06012016 fumed: “#miraclemeat please everyone complain to @Ofcom this is disgraceful. Talking about children donating their bodies for meat! Joke or not this is disgusting!” (sic)

“What on earth was that all about?! I spent the first 10 minutes feeling sick, then realised it couldn’t be real. Is it April fools’ day all over again?” @louisemoughton tweeted. (sic)

@MoonShot102 added: “@Channel4 Surely that sick & twisted program #MiracleMeat is a career killer for @GreggAWallace Everything about it was grotesque & pointless! Satire that depraved has no place on British television! @Ofcom Count this as a formal complaint!” (sic)

@Ian_Chilvers went on to say: “Very poor @Channel4 for showing #miraclemeat before the watershed and without any disclaimer. I suspect you’ve just made @Ofcom very busy dealing with complaints and possibly just ended @GreggAWallace’s career.”

Despite the backlash, many viewers realised the programme was a spoof in a bid to get people talking.

@petermac68 shared: “So it was clearly a spoof. I realised a few minutes into it but I watched it to its end to find out its purpose and in my opinion, the purpose of any kind of meat is distasteful. It was poorly done and not funny #miraclemeat.” (sic)

@Joej501 praised: “#miraclemeat in a world of fake news this was the best factual documentary I’ve seen in a long time.”

@RyanBHC defended the show, saying: “#miraclemeat, if this showed anything, is that Brits need to lighten up crikey.” (sic)
