EastEnders star says meeting King Charles was more surreal than first day on set

EastEnders actor Ross Boatman explained how surreal it was to meet King Charles and revealed the royal was well up to scratch with his knowledge on the cast.

The 58-year-old has been playing Harvey Monroe since summer of 2021 and recalled meeting the King, 73, during his visit to the EastEnders set.

The monarch came to the BBC set alongside Camilla, Queen Consort in March to appear in a special episode of the soap dedicated to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Ross revealed that around 100 people were lined up and spoken to by the King one on one after filming was done, adding that the King had clearly done his research.

Speaking to Daily Star at the Inside Soap Awards, the soap star said: "It was a bit bizarre and surreal. It was more surreal than my first day on the set in Albert Square. Suddenly being in amongst all these iconic actors and characters. But meeting him was even more surreal."

He added: "He was lovely. Very warm and very charming!"

The professional poker player went on to say: "When we finished filming, we all lined up around the square – about 100 of us and he came round and spoke to us all one by one, and he seemed to know something about everybody."

Ross revealed that the King was aware of his current storyline at the time which involved Jean Slater fleeing to Southend after her mental health deteriorated.

The London's Burning star said: "He asked why I wasn’t in Southend looking for Jean."

Stood next to him was Jean actress Gillian Wright who was stunned by this admission as she chimed: "Did he really? I can’t believe you’ve never told me that!"

"Maybe somebody briefs him but it was still amazing," Ross added.

Ross also admitted that he had been a fan of EastEnders since it started and explained it was "very strange" when he landed the role of Harvey.
