Chris Kamara applauded for Millionaire performance amid speech battle

Chris Kamara has been commended for his appearance on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? on Sunday night as he battles a condition affecting his speech.

The former footballer, 64, revealed in March that he had developed apraxia of speech, a neurological disorder that affects the brain pathways.

Kamara took part in the celebrity special in the hopes of raking in some cash for Marie Curie, his chosen charity.

The presenter made it all the way to the £64,000 question, which asked: ‘Which of these nationalities has not won an F1 championship since 2000?’

Unsure of the answer, Kamara phoned a friend, Steph McGovern, for help, however ended up incorrectly submitting Finland, with Brazil being correct.

As a result, Kamara bowed out of the game with an impressive £32,000 for charity.

‘You know, I didn’t read the question properly… since 2000!’ he chuckled.

Presenter Jeremy Clarkson replied: ‘Listen the fact is, you are leaving here with £32,000. I’m delighted. And it’s been the hugest amount of fun having you here.’

Viewers rallied around Kamara after his appearance, with many commending him for taking part.

‘Chris Kamara – what a man,’ wrote one. ‘I was really moved when he opened up with his battle with apraxia of speech.’

‘Chris Kamara proving he’s even more of a legend doing Who Wants to be a Millionaire? with speech apraxia. Well done @chris_kammy,’ another added.

Kamara has previously spoken about feeling like ‘a fraud’ as a broadcaster due to apraxia.

‘But BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 said “no – you’re Kammy, it doesn’t matter”. And would you believe it, I’m now doubly busy than what I was before.

‘I’d like to thank all the people who have been persistent and said a 25 per cent Kammy is still better than some people.’
