Coronation Street star lands role in rival soap two decades after exit

Coronation Street: Leanne says goodbye to Nick

Former Coronation Street star Adam Rickitt has landed a new role on a rival soap more than two decades since his departure from Weatherfield.

Adam played Nick Tilsley on and off from 1997 to 2004 but is set to take on a new character in BBC’s Doctors, making his return to screens.

An insider told The Sun: “Adam was amongst the best soap actors in the country so it was only a matter of time before he landed a new role.

“He’s really excited to get started on Doctors and bosses can’t wait to see how viewers react to him.”

“Adam has spent a lot of time working on his bar but is in a position to get back to acting now.”

During the soap star’s time on Corrie, his character caused controversy when he married Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) at the age of 17.

He went on to later pay for her to have an abortion because he claimed he wasn’t ready to have a family yet.

The pair separated shortly afterwards, and when he returned to the cobbles a few years later, Nick began a romance with Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon).

Adam first left the role in 1999, as he embarked on a short-lived music career, releasing hit single Breathe Again after signing a six-album deal with Polydor.

Adam’s character was also involved in the soap’s first-ever gay kiss with Todd Grimshaw (played by Bruno Langley).

After leaving Corrie, he went on to take part in New Zealand soap Shortland Street and then Hollyoaks as Kyle Kelly.

He left Hollyoaks in 2020 when his character took his own life.

Adam also took a step away from the limelight for a short while and dedicated his time to setting up a bar in Cheshire called Dexter & Jones with his wife and Good Morning Britain reporter Katy Fawcett.

According to the bar’s website, Dexter and Jones stocks “more than 450 different craft beers, 10 draft beers (which are ever changing), more than 150 small batch gins and more than 60 different wines”.

Guidance on its website continues: “When it comes to craft beer, we are constantly on the hunt. From securing one-off lines by the biggest names in brewing to seeking out the start-ups breaking new ground.

“When it comes to gins we focus on small batch distillers who make their drinks naturally without artificial flavourings, striving for the perfect botanical mix to tickle your tastebuds.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV.
