Sue Devaney has joked she always blames Debbie Webster’s behaviour on the menopause.

The Coronation Street actress – who first played her character from 1984 to 1985 before returning to the cobbles in 2019 – has weighed in on her alter ego’s more ‘out there’ antics and admitted she’s got her own explanation.

Appearing on Monday’s episode of This Morning, she said: ‘I just say that whatever storyline they give Debbie, if she’s a bit out there, I put it all down to menopause!’

She laughed: ‘I promised I won’t mention the menopause, but I’ve got to because I understand it.’

The 55-year-old star admitted she loves playing Debbie even if she can be ‘very naughty’, while getting to work with so many different people on the Corrie set keeps things interesting.

She added: ‘It’s really good fun, and it’s nice that I was in it when I was 16, and now I’m in my 50s and I’m back in it…

‘They didn’t recast, they didn’t use somebody else which they could have done. They could’ve gone for a taller, more glamorous younger actress.’

Meanwhile, Sue noted there are many layers to her character, including ‘a softness’ which doesn’t always come across.

‘It’s like anybody. They’re not awful through and through… She’s got that side to her but she’s a businesswoman and she is quite hard… Portraying that is brilliant, but underneath there is a softness there,’ she explained.

‘She’s had it tough, never been married, never had any children. She’s had to be a tough cookie all her life, she’s had to survive.’

And the actress is happy to be working in a career that can be so uncertain for many performers, while she keeps things fresh by ‘never’ asking about upcoming plots.

She added: ‘It’s just a pleasure, as a jobbing actor, to be working. We just love work. Sometimes – I drive to work every day and I’m like, blooming heck, I’m doing what I love every day.

‘A lot of my mates that are actors, if you work three jobs a year it’s a good year for you. To do this kind of work – I never wanna know what the storyline is because I think in life you don’t know what’s going to happen.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV. Coronation Street continues tonight at 8pm also on ITV.
