Coronation Street’s Chesney Brown star fears being axed after 20 years

Coronation Street: Gemma and Chesney argue over money

Storming into Weatherfield at the age of nine, Sam Aston has been a permanent fixture on the ITV soap Coronation Street.

Sam has played Chesney Brown for 20 years but recently admitted he still fears being axed from the show, despite being “part of the furniture”.

Each cast member of Coronation Street has a contract renewal every 12 months, with Sam admitting that it is always stressful when it rolls around.

He told The Mirror: “I worry about it every year, 100 percent. I’ve had that thought more so as an adult because I have more responsibilities now.

“I have two children and I’ve got a mortgage. People say to me ‘You are part of the furniture, you’ll be here forever’ but I don’t see it like that. I just take it one year at a time.

“I’m lucky to be here. I’ve never taken it for granted or rested on my laurels. No character is bigger than the show, so I’m always very grateful when I get that call asking me to stay.”

Discussing who he looks up to on the show, William Roache who plays Ken Barlow sprung to mind.

“It would be surreal but cool. People have watched me grow up and I can imagine Chesney being an old man and pottering off to the Rovers. It would be an honour.”

Throughout his time on the show, Sam has featured in a host of dramatic storylines which first started with his early days being a mischievous youngster.

Another storyline which Sam was heavily involved in was his relationship with his heartless mother Cilla Battersby-Brown (played by Wendi Peters).

His most recent storyline sees Chesney and his partner Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) facing financial troubles.

The pair have four children together and Gemma is trying to kick start her own daycare company while Chesney dreams of a burger business.

Next week, the pair will tie the knot with Gemma’s immaculate but budget wedding, seeing the bride walk down the aisle in a bright orange wedding dress.

Despite having successful storylines, Sam also admitted that writers struggled to find stories for him as he was going from a young boy to a teenager.

He said: “It was a strange time when I was leaving high school. It was weird moving from child actor to adult actor.

“I had a meeting with the producer. She said: ‘You’re not cute little Chesney any more but you’re not a full-grown adult man either.’ Things were a bit quiet.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV.
