Coronation Street fans believe Stephen has returned to steal his mother's money.

Stephen Reid made his long awaited return to the ITV soap last month and it was just in time to save Audrey from a horrific accident after she found herself trapped under a motorcycle all night.

But fans aren't convinced that Stephen's motives are genuine and have predicted that he is there for one thing only.

Taking to Reddit with their theories, one viewer claimed Stephen is back because he is "trying to get Audrey's money."

Another agreed, saying: "Money brings out the worst in families. Especially when someone dies. They all come out of the woodwork if they think they can benefit financially."

Further speculating about Stephen's ulterior motives on Twitter, one viewer said: "Stephen will be back… Or alternatively, he won't be and Audrey's money will be gone."

"Audrey will get ripped off by scammer Stephen," claimed another.

"I think Stephen is trying to rinse Audrey #Corrie," quipped a third.

During tonight's episode (July 22), poor Audrey found herself in hospital after "deliberately" overdosing on sleeping pills.

While the true reason behind her overdose is yet to be revealed, one fan speculated that Stephen's plan could already be in motion and is now taking its toll on Audrey.

"I wonder if Audrey knows Steohen has crossed her and her money has gone or something #corrie," they theorized.

Throughout the episode, members of the Platt family noticed Audrey's change in behaviour, noting she seemed quieter and wasn't eating as much.

However, they continued on with celebrating her birthday and finally revealed that they had leased back the salon for her.

A distracted Audrey barely reacted to the present and seemingly made an excuse to dash out.

Later in the episode, Gail explained that she went looking for her mum but couldn't find her, calling her several times to get in contact.

Calling one more time, Audrey finally answered and claimed that she was at home, however it was soon revealed that she was in fact calling from a hospital bed.

The doctor told Audrey he would be happier if she "spoke to someone" and informed her he wanted to make her next of kin "aware about the situation."

Audrey assured the doctor it was a "silly accident," but he was adamant that her toxicology report "isn't suggestive of an accident."

The doctor revealed that Audrey overdosed on sleeping pills and said the number she took "indicates something more deliberate."
