Corrie star on how worried Elaine should be over becoming Stephen's next kill
As Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox) agrees to marry Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) in upcoming Coronation Street episodes, viewers will be seriously worried for her welfare.
After all, we know that Stephen has no qualms about ruthlessly dispatching anyone who gets in his way and we also know that he’s only really interested in Elaine for her money.
Once he has his hands on the cash, Elaine could represent too much of a nuisance for the multiple murderer and could swiftly see herself following Leo Thompkins (Joe Frost), Teddy Thompkins (Grant Burgin) and Rufus Donahue (Steven Meo) on Stephen’s list of victims.
Actress Paula Wilcox told us that she often meets people out in public who warn her off Stephen.
‘It’s wonderful when the public knows something the characters don’t,’ she observed.
‘I love the dramatic irony. People are always saying to me that I need to stay away from Stephen, but I just say “oh no you’re wrong he is lovely,” I go along with it because Elaine has no idea about what they know about him.’

She told us that Stephen has played a very clever game with Elaine by telling her he’s been previously coercively controlled in his marriage.
‘I think as soon as he says that he’s been coercively controlled she is blindsided,’ she told us. ‘And it has to be said Stephen is a very good actor. He can even turn the tears on and makes himself seem very vulnerable.
‘And I think that makes him seem like a little boy lost sometimes. Women want to take care of him and I think despite Elaine’s experience with controlling men she doesn’t see that she is under his spell.
‘She’s been quite happy with what she’s been given by him. She hasn’t seemed to want more.’
While Elaine has seen little glimpses of Stephen’s nastier side, Paula says she dismisses it as stress. ‘She thinks that it’s time for him to hang up the suit and start enjoying life and going on cruises and having a bit of fun.
‘She rightly knows that he’s stressed. She just doesn’t know the real reason why he is.’
Viewers know that the reason he’s stressed is because of the increasing body count and the fact he always has to keep track of his lies. Paula thinks there’s another side to him that could have played out differently if he hadn’t started out on his murderous path.
‘We have done some scenes recently where they are very playful with each other and joking around. I think in another life if Stephen hadn’t started killing people they could really have made a go of things and been great friends.’
Sadly we’ll never know if this could be the case, and the situation being what it is, could Stephen be lining Elaine up as his next victim? Paula told us that her character is currently blissfully unaware of Stephen’s sinister side – but it mightn’t be long before she finds herself in danger.
‘I think as far as she is concerned, there is nothing but excitement about moving to the next stage of the relationship,’ she said.
‘She is really looking forward to having him to herself, and being alone with Stephen.
