Corries Aadi star Adam Hussain, 22, on awkward toyboy scenes
Aadi Alahan was born on Coronation Street 18 years ago, and now Adam Hussain is about to propel him into his most adult storyline yet. Manchester actor Adam, 22, took over the role three years ago and has since developed the character from an awkward teenager into a young man.
Adam says, “Seeing Aadi change from a schoolboy to a young adult has been really fun. Playing him as he matures and begins to earn his stripes has been a pleasure and I’m looking forward to seeing what he gets up to next as a young, ambitious man.”
The story opened with entrepreneur Darren Vance asking Aadi to pick up his wife, Courtney, played by Stephanie Davis. But it quickly became clear she was trouble as she set out to seduce Aadi. Soon they were embroiled in an affair, which is about to get a lot messier.
“At first Aadi was intimidated by Courtney’s advances,” admits Adam. “He thought she was only being friendly and Aadi wouldn’t want to ruin his relationship with Darren. I’m guessing Courtney’s attracted to him because he’s quite young and innocent.
“The idea of an affair makes it quite enticing and fun for Courtney and she sees that Aadi does become quickly infatuated with her and she realises she’s got him wrapped around her finger.”
Courtney hopes a younger man will give her the attention she’s not getting from Darren, while Aadi is caught up in the thrill of being with an older woman. However, it’s not too long before they get caught – by Amy Barlow.
“It’s a nightmare scenario for Aadi,” says Adam. “His crush has caught him in a sexual situation with another woman, ruining his chances with her. He doesn’t want to hurt Amy’s feelings, but he’s not even sure if she has any for him.
“So the whole ordeal certainly makes him very flustered and as he continues to get more wrapped around Courtney’s finger, he develops more feelings for her. So Aadi ignores the notion of Amy feeling anything for him. But if Courtney wasn’t in the picture, it would definitely go somewhere.”
Amy agrees to keep their fling under wraps – for now. But if news of the affair gets out, it could prove devastating for the Alahans.
“Amy reassures Aadi that his secret is safe with her,” says Adam. “Aadi’s desperate to get into Darren’s good books to make the investment happen, especially when Dev reveals he’s in quite a lot of debt. For that to be ruined by Aadi’s own sexual gratification could be devastating.”
Courtney is not Aadi’s first love, though. He went out with Summer Spellman then Kelly Neelan before apparently developing feelings for Amy. But those were stories of young love, while Aadi and Courtney’s relationship is much more physical.
“At first, I was a little nervous, but also excited, for the story,” Adam admits. “It’s an intimate story and I’ve never done anything like it, other than with Kelly, which was more of a sweet, innocent love. But this takes things up a notch by being quite raunchy in some scenes, and I was looking forward to trying out stuff I never have before – it has been quite fun.
“I was a bit worried about the chemistry between Aadi and Courtney, but working with Steph has quelled that notion. She’s so easy to get along with, and being the talented actress that she is has made the work come out great.”
“Aadi’s certainly aware of the consequences of the affair and he’s tried to resist Courtney,” he adds. “If the fling is exposed, Dev could be financially ruined and Aadi’s prospects for a successful career tarnished, as well. But the excitement and danger is fun, especially with an older woman.”
Although Adam is pleased about the storyline, he’s not too happy about his family watching it unfold. “I don’t think I’ll watch with them,” he laughs. “It would be awkward, especially to watch the scenes with my parents. I know they are going to see it nonetheless because they’re avid Corrie watchers. But I won’t be watching it with them.”
