Dame Deborah James’ mum says Prince William was like son in law

Deborah James’ mum calls Prince William ‘another son in law’

Cancer campaigner Dame Deborah James famously received a home visit from Prince William in her final days as he honoured her with a Damehood for her fundraising efforts on behalf of cancer charities.

While most recipients of the honour would attend the palace to receive it Deborah was too weak by this stage of her illness, so William deemed it fit to pay her an in person visit instead.

Obviously, this caused huge excitement in the household and on today’s Loose Women her mother Heather gave an insight into the occasion.

Speaking to the panel which included Denise Welch and Dame Kelly Holmes she revealed that the Prince quickly put them at their ease.

Recalling a moment of panic before his entrance she said: “I thought ‘Deborah, how do you… address him?”

However, this never became an issue as she subsequently told how William made them feel very relaxed.

“That (worry) was taken away from us because it’s, ‘Hello I’m William’,” she said.

As the panel listened intently, she intimated: “It was just like having another son in law with us.”

Deborah was awarded the Damehood for her tireless fundraising efforts on behalf of cancer charities.

In the last few months of her life, the BBC podcast host raised an incredible £4million for charity, while she was receiving end of life care following a six year battle with bowel cancer.

Immediately after Prince William’s visit, the newly appointed Dame took to her Instagram to tell her followers about her royal visitor.

She wrote: “Prince William actually came to our family house today!!

“I am utterly honoured that he joined us for afternoon tea and champagne, where he not only spent a generous amount of time talking to my whole family but also honoured me with my Damehood.

“It’s quite surreal having a royal pop in at home, and yes you can imagine the cleaning antics and preparation went off the scale – but it was all irrelevant because William was so kind and he put us all at ease.

“He is clearly passionate about improving oncology outcomes as the President of the Royal Marsden.”

She continued: “It was such a special day for my whole family, making memories to last a lifetime.

“He’s welcome back any time!” she added. Deborah also shared the snaps to her story, tagging the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

“Most surreal day ever!” she captioned a picture of William posing with the whole family.

The bubbly brunette died aged just 40 in June 2022 however her campaigning lives on.

On Monday the BBC aired a documentary about her life and work entitled Bowelbabe In Her Own Words, while Lorraine Kelly is currently running a No Butts campaign on her morning show for Bowel Cancer Awareness month.
