Dan Walker recalls ‘out of body experience’ as he issues update after crash

Dan Walker has candidly opened up about his ongoing recovery from a near-fatal bike accident last week.

The 45-year-old was hit by a car while commuting to work on a bike and was left with a bloodied and bruised face.

And now, the former BBC presenter has issued an update on how he’s doing during an appearance on the Jeremy Vine show on Thursday (March 2).

“You're looking so much better than you did a week ago it's brilliant," host Jeremy told Dan.

Dan replied: "I feel a lot better as well."

He went on: “My kids think I am like Wolverine! I'm very thankful I've healed facially, there's still a few lumps and bumps and grazes all over me. I've got a badly damaged hand, I won't take my trousers off Jeremy but l've got a massive bruise on my right hip at the moment."

Dan then expressed his gratitude towards the medical professionals who looked after him – saying he has “zero memory” after the horror crash.

“I've found out when I spoke to the police last week that there were five people who when I came off the bike they came onto the roundabout and sat with me for 25 minutes until the ambulance turned up.

"I've got zero memory of any of that Jeremy, I can't remember anything from the moment I arrive on the roundabout.

“But it's things like that, the goodness of people in difficult situations but I'm very grateful to be here and getting back to the job that I love., going back on telly later today."

Talking about the incident, he said: “I remember coming to the roundabout, I looked to my right, I saw a gap and I went.

“The next thing I remember… it's almost like an out of body experience. I saw myself looking at a black screen and then the screen expanded from a white circle in the middle of it and into that circle came the heads of two paramedics, a police officer and the driver who hit me with the car.

“I have no recollection of what happened between those times.”

The presenter then said that he hadn't been able to watch back the footage of the accident, insisting: “I don't want to watch it, I haven't got any flashbacks and I don't want any either.”

Dan went on: “I'm just very thankful I'm here, I'm ok, and the scans all says that my brain is fine, so if I can get out of it with a few lumps and bumps then I can say I'm very thankful.”

It comes after Dan revealed he had reached out to the driver involved in the accident and was hoping to resolve the matter "outside of court".

In a column for The Times published earlier his week, he wrote: "I can't go into details at the moment because the police might take another week or so to publish their report.

“But, after talking to Conor (a police officer), I am confident that I am not to blame and I hope this can be resolved outside the courts."

He added: "I know I could have died but I also know how easy it is to make a mistake, even when you're trying to be careful."
