EastEnders’ Christmas Day episode saw an explosive plotline unfold after Janine Butcher (played by Charlie Brooks) and Linda (Kellie Bright) ended up trapped in a car that had crashed into the ocean after dropping from a cliff. Fans have known for some time that Mick’s (Danny Dyer) exit from the BBC soap would be taking place at Christmas, and after the EastEnders favourite jumped into the water to save Linda, he never returned. However, while it seems Mick has met a tragic death, show boss Chris Clenshaw has revealed Linda will remain in the soap.
Mick and Linda have become one of the most popular couples in soap history, but a recent rocky spell in their marriage has seen them split up and evil Janine swooping in on Mick.
The two got married after Janine found out she’s pregnant, but some Christmas Day revelations saw Mick finally realising how manipulative his new wife was.
However, following a brief reunion, the episode saw Mick and Linda chasing after a scheming Janine who was trying to evade the consequences of her actions.
After Janine’s attempt to flee led to her and Linda falling into the depths of the ocean, Mick wasted no time diving in to save the pair.
With Janine trapped, Mick rescued her from the vehicle after Linda prompted him to help her because of the unborn baby.
Unbeknownst to Mick, Linda managed to free herself and swim out of the freezing waters.
Mick, not realising this, had jumped back in to save his ex-wife, but never re-emerged.
Speculation has been rife about the potential for Linda to leave the soap ever since it was announced Mick was going to be written out.
However, Chris has made it clear Linda will be remaining a staple character on the soap.
Chris explained: “I’m delighted that Kellie Bright is staying in Albert Square.
“Over the years, Linda has cemented herself as a modern-day matriarch and we have big plans ahead for her.”
Speaking to Metro, he added: “Linda’s still very much at the heart of Albert Square.”
Fans will probably struggle to picture the Queen Vic landlady without her soulmate Mick by her side.
Chris added: “Linda is not going to get over Mick very quickly.
“She was just reunited with him then he was snatched away from her so it won’t be all smiles straight away.”
After 10 years on the soap, it was announced earlier this year that Danny had decided to leave EastEnders.
An EastEnders spokesperson confirmed to Express.co.uk at the time: “Danny will be leaving EastEnders when his contract comes to an end later this year.
“Danny has made Mick Carter an iconic character which we shall always be grateful for, however, we won’t be saying goodbye just yet as there’s still quite some time – and plenty of explosive drama for Mick – to come before he departs Walford.”
A friend close to the actor explained he is “incredibly grateful” to EastEnders for the opportunities the show gave him.
They said: “Danny loves EastEnders but as an actor he feels the time is right to explore other roles.
“He’s incredibly grateful to the show and the opportunities it has given him and it wasn’t a decision he took lightly.
“But, after playing Mick for nearly nine years he feels it’s time to give the character of Mick a rest.”
EastEnders continues on Tuesday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
