EastEnders fans floored as flashforward teases Christmas 2023 murder plot

Monday night’s episode of EastEnders, 20 February, has teased a future storyline nearly a year in advance.

In a show first, EastEnders fans were shown Christmas 2023 flashforward scenes of six of Walford’s much loved matriarchs, Denise (Diane Parish), Kathy (Gillian Taylforth), Linda (Kellie Bright), Sharon (Letitia Dean), Stacey (Lacey Turner) and Suki (Balvinder Sopal) are faced with a dead body.

However, it’s unclear whose body it is and what’s happened to them.

In the moments that unfolded at the Queen Vic, the group of women all stood round in shock in a festive-looking pub and looked down at a man lying on the floor.

Not much was said between the six of them, but Sharon leant over the body and confirmed he was dead.

Wearing a wedding dress, Sharon had some blood on her dress while Stacey had it all over her hands.

Taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the explosive scenes, one person penned: “Omg well, it's not Christmas if there's not a death on the square #EastEnders but who is it”.

“Sharon in a wedding dress on Christmas day?! Some guy dead on the floor! Was it Denise that murdered him!? And 10 months to wait FS,” added another.

“OMG the suspense I’m not going to be able to rest until #Christmas2023 !!! #EastEnders”, said a third.

A fourth added: “OMG #EASTENDERS HAS ME ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED. JAW F***ING DROPPED [clapping emojis]”.

EastEnders executive producer Chris Clenshaw revealed that the flashforward has been in the pipeline since late last year after he’d been looking for a “blockbuster story”.

“There was clearly an appetite for a ‘whodunnit’,” he said. “But I was reluctant to play a ‘whodunnit’ in the traditional form, largely due to the spectacularly brilliant ‘Who Killed Lucy’ storyline, that was not just hugely successful but also incredibly gripping throughout.”

Chris went on: “I therefore tasked the writing and story team that if we were to do another ‘whodunnit’ it would have to be different, have to feel different, and have to have a very different mechanic at its core.

“A couple of our writers and story team took that brief on board and came back with the idea of flashing forward and, in doing so, we’re promising a ‘whodunnit’ is coming in the future. We developed the idea and thought it would be even more exciting if we didn’t reveal who the victim is – becoming so much more than a ‘whodunnit’… It’s a ‘who-is-it’ as well.”

As to why Denise, Kathy, Linda, Sharon, Stacey and Suki were chosen to be part of it all, Chris said it was down to the fact they six soap favourites “are each involved in stories connected to the men in their lives”.

The storyline will play out over the next ten months, with the only thing Chris confirming being that the victim is male.

He further teased: “I’m not going to give anything away that the episode hasn’t already given, but what I will say is there were clues in there. Did you look closely? I urge everyone to re-watch the scene and look at every detail.

“There’s also a few treats in the scene if you look hard enough.”

EastEnders continues weeknights at 7:30pm on BBC One.
