EastEnders fans go wild as legendary character returns in huge twist

EastEnders fans were at the edge of their seats in tonight's episode as Ricky Butcher (Sid Owen) made his shock return.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Ricky would come back to the show after 10 years as part of Janine Butcher’s exit storyline, but fans had no idea when this would happen and were more than surprised when he arrived on Thursday December 1's episode.

The episode was largely focused around the Christmas lights party at The Vic, with Janine determined to work on her relationship with Mick Carter at any cost when she got a devastating update from bridesmaid Sonia Fowler as she continued to suspect there was still love between Mick and ex Linda Carter.

When Sonia revealed she'd seen Mick and Linda in a compromising moment as he brushed the hair away from her face, Janine exploded with anger as she went at Sonia.

But she got the shock of her life when her brother Ricky showed up to see her at the Vic.

Earlier this week, Sonia made a secret phone call to an unknown person after she grew concerned about Janine’s paranoia over Mick’s feelings for Linda.

Viewers were just as shocked as Janine when they saw Ricky on the screen again since the last time he was seen was in 2012.

One fan said on Twitter: "there was so much good stuff in that episode i can’t process it. janine is janineing. all the performances were incredible. amy and denise were really sweet. loved kathy and sonia’s scenes. RICKY BUTCHER IS BACK?? community spirit is STRONG! #EastEnders."

Another viewer said: "I hardly ever watch #EastEnders … Ricky is back! Have I time travelled back to the 90s."

A third fan said: "Can’t believe we’re losing Janine this month, wish we could keep her and Ricky permanently #EastEnders."

As the writers of EastEnders have been planning Janine's last few episodes, actress, Charlie Brooks, recently stunned fans on Wednesday as she shared a shot of her new hair-do ahead of her next acting job.

Charlie, who has appeared on and off as Janine Butcher in the BBC soap since 1999, shared a picture on her Instagram story that shows her having a wig installed ahead of her National Theatre debut where she will play Ursula in The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
