EastEnders star Neil McDermott teases return as Ryan Malloy leaves after bombshell

EastEnders star Neil McDermott has teased his return to Walford after his explosive exit in Thursday night’s episode.

Neil first joined EastEnders as the brother of Shona McGarty’s Whitney Dean back in 2009, and despite his exit two years later in 2011, he returned to the square in 2014, 2016 and again earlier this week.

Ryan returned to the show earlier this week after discovering that the daughter he shares with Lacey Turner’s Stacey Slater, Lily, was pregnant.

Lily, played by Lillia Turner, found out she was pregnant earlier this year after being admitted to the hospital following a Carbon Monoxide leak on New Year’s Day.

Ryan was naturally shocked during his return and seemed to argue with Stacey constantly.

In Thursday’s climactic episode, Lily decided to move to Wakefield with her father, that was until she watched him berate her mother.

Lily chose to stay with the Slater clan on Albert Square, much to Ryan’s dismay, as he vowed to reduce child maintenance payments to the already struggling family.

Fans were left wondering whether Ryan’s appearance was fleeting or whether BBC bosses intended to bring him back as a more regular cast member

Neil, who has also worked on Doctor Who and Casualty, addressed the speculation while chatting with Metro.

After admitting that it’s always lovely to return, Neil explained: ‘I’m doing a play at the moment called “Home, I’m Darling” and I play Johnny. It’s a play written by Laura Wade who’s an amazing writer.”

He continued to explain that after winning an Olivier for best comedy, the show is going on tour across the country.

While this makes Neil’s EastEnders return unlikely, the actor did not categorically say no, which means fans would see a Ryan return sometime in the future.

The stage actor also noted how it’s “a lovely phone call to receive, especially when I’ve got the time and can make it work”, so who knows?

Stacey was informed of her daughter’s pregnancy earlier this year when a doctor asked: “We were worried about the severity of your daughter’s stomach aches so we did an ultrasound and something’s come back that given her age is of concern.

“Were you aware that your daughter is sexually active? She’s pregnant.”

Stacey, horrified, shook her head and replied: “She can’t be – she’s 12 years old.”

On the storyline, Lacey said: "Stacey is treading on eggshells. She needs to find out from Lily how this happened, who the father is, and all the details. But to do that, she needs to build trust with Lily, and if her daughter wants it to be a secret, then Stacey will keep it secret.”
