EastEnders viewers in floods of tears as Dot Cotton returns for final time
EastEnders left fans sobbing on Thursday night as Sonia Fowler, Jack Branning, Dotty Cotton and Whitney Dean gathered for a very special goodbye to an Albert Square legend.
Eight months since the iconic June Brown passed away at the age of 95, it was time for the soap to bid her iconic character Dot Cotton a final farewell, with her nearest and dearest gathered in front of her coffin.
Played by Natalie Cassidy, 39, a wet-eyed Sonia admitted she "wasn't ready to say goodbye" to her step-grandmother, as Jack, Dotty and Whitney struggled to contain their emotions.
As you'd expect, fans reacting on Twitter were sniffling too, as one wrote: "That last scene was devastatingly good, not ready for next week #EastEnders."
"Going to be an emotional wreck watching the funeral next week #EastEnders", "Dot's funeral episode is gonna be one of saddest episodes this year. #EastEnders," added two more.
"I have to say, big applause for @bbceastenders making the ending of each episode about Dot have either no sound or respectful music and not the duff duffs, tonight's episode was a great example. #EastEnders," read another message.
The imminent funeral is set to reintegrate Jacqueline Jossa's Lauren Branning, Jan Graveson's Disa O'Brien, Lord Michael Cashman's Colin Russell and Tom Watt's Lofty Holloway to name a few.
Commenting on her return after four years out of the soap game, actress Jacqueline previously shared: "I’d hoped it would happen. June deserves the send-off she’s going to get at EastEnders, and I wanted to be a part of that and be involved.
"It was nice to be there to represent that side of the Branning family because there are family members always off gallivanting and doing different things."
Meanwhile, EastEnders executive producer Chris Clenshaw had this to say: "For quite a while, no-one could even think about saying goodbye to Dot; an iconic character who will go down in television history and be cherished forever.
"June was always adamant that she never wanted Dot’s time to end while she was still with us, but she also knew that EastEnders would rightly say their farewells to Dot when the time was right.
"Sadly that time has come and we are determined to give the audience, who treasured Dot for so many years, the fitting tribute that she so deeply deserves. So whilst it will be a very, very sad day in Walford, we will be giving Dot the send-off that she and June would want and rightly deserve."
