Paralympian Ellie Simmonds is continuing to dazzle the Strictly Come Dancing judges and BBC viewers alike with her ballroom moves. The 27-year-old and her partner Nikita Kuzmin are set to dance the Paso Doble to Montagues and Capulets by Sergei Prokofiev this weekend for week five of the competition. Behavioural expert Darren Stanton believes the swimmer will make it through to the final based on the strength of her partnership with her Ukrainian dance partner.
Body language expert Darren said Ellie’s close bond with Nikita makes her a fierce Strictly contender.
The athlete has sailed through to the BBC’s 100th-anniversary episode of the competition after scoring 30 points out of a possible 40 for last week’s Salsa.
Following the routine, Nikita told Ellie: “I have to say, Ellie, you haven’t achieved five Paralympic gold medals without some stumbles along the way.
“You always pick yourself up, you always push hard, and this is the result.”
Reflecting on Ellie’s body language with Nikita as they were discussing Saturday’s routine with hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, Darren said Ellie and Nikita have grown to be a much-loved couple by the general public.
He added: “I think one of Ellie‘s endearing qualities is her humility as she never assumes that she has made it to the next week or expects to sail through the competition.”
Darren feels Ellie wants to work as hard as she does on her Paralympic training as she does on Strictly.
“When it was announced she got through on Sunday night’s results show she displayed genuine elation, never taking the success for granted, which shows great humility and a person who is not being ruled by ego,” he noted.
“There are also a few interesting tell-tale signs that Ellie and Nikita have grown to be incredibly close to each other,” Darren continued:
“In the results show, when Ellie spoke to Claudia about being recognised by someone while out with Nikita, it was noticeable she did not use the word ‘I’.
“It was not ‘I did this’ or ‘I did that’, it was about them as a pair as she told the story.”
He also highlighted how Ellie placed her hand flat on her chest in the heart area, explaining how this gesture displays genuine feelings, passion and authenticity.
“Plus, she kept turning her body toward Nikita, bringing him into the conversation and showing how at ease she is with him,” Darren said.
“Once again this interaction demonstrated her humility at being recognised on the street, while also showing the closeness of her partnership with Nikita.
“I think Ellie demonstrates the importance of having a great attitude and a very solid work ethic, with these qualities being able to take you far.
“I have no doubt that Ellie is a strong contender for the final, if not to win.”
Bros singer Matt Goss was the latest celebrity to be sent home from the competition.
Matt had to perform his Jive to All Shook Up by Paul McCartney after failing to impress the judges.
He was in the dance-off with former Coronation Street star Kym Marsh who the judges saved from elimination.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One.
