Emma Thompson looks completely unrecognisable as she steps into the shoes of Miss Trunchbull in the new adaptation of Matilda.

Appearing on Tuesday's (October 11) instalment of Lorraine, Matilda the Musical composer Tim Minchin spoke to host Lorraine Kelly about the Oscar-winning actresses new role and how brilliant she is in it.

The Australian star also composed the score for the remake of the Roald Dahl classic set for release in November.

The 2022 film is based on the musical and sees a star-studded cast take on the iconic roles, including Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham playing Mr Wormwood and James Bond actress Lashana Lynch starring as Miss Honey.

But it was the Love Actually star, 63, who Tim couldn't stop gushing over as he reflected on her epic transformation she underwent to perfectly portray the evil teacher.

Lorraine pointed out how different the actress looked, saying: "Emma Thompson. Almost unrecognisable."

"Yeah a few hours in prosthetics," responded the writer.

Gushing over the star and her new role, he added: "She's a completely consummate actor, she's extraordinary.

Speaking about trying to get the right balance with children watching the film, he went on to say: "The main thing you need to do with Roald Dahl adaptations and children stories that have baddies in them is get that line between things.

"Trunchbull is a monster and we want kids to be able to watch this film and feel the tension of it, but to be scared in a way that it's not reality."

Gushing over the actress further, he called the Nanny McPhee actress "amazing and really scary," joking that children won't be traumatised for "too long" after watching.

Speaking in an interview prior, the comedian said working with the star was a "dream come true."

"She just threw herself so hard into this role," he added, later confessing: "And I've loved her all my life, so this is so exciting."

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV
