Emmerdale bosses reveal three major characters returning for 50th anniversary as part of big storyline

Emmerdale bosses have finally revealed what fans can expect from the soap's huge 50th anniversary this year – revealing that three characters will be returning to the village especially.

Speaking to OK! and and other reporters, the ITV soap's executive producer Jane Hudson said of the celebrations: "We have got every story imaginable.

"We've got things that are going to make you laugh, make you cry, make you surprised, and stunts that are going to rock your world. It's the week that's going to deliver the most epic of stunts," she promised.

The explosive episodes will see a huge storm hitting the village and Jane added: "It's safe to say that the village won't be the same after this, and it will never be the same again, because the impact this storm has on people's lives.

"It’s just massive. In terms of filming, it's quite unprecedented in terms of what we're doing and the scale of what we're doing."

As if all that isn't enough, there are also some big characters making a return to the Dales – Diane [Sugden], Aaron [Dingle] and Tracy [Metcalfe] will all be reappearing on a temporary basis.

The show's boss Kate Brooks teased: "They'll be at the heart of some really big stories that will impact their lives, and not just their lives, the lives of the characters they leave behind.

"So it's all it's all really exciting, and it's all brilliant!"

Aaron is played by Danny Miller – who recently got married in a ceremony covered exclusively by OK! – while Tracy is played by Amy Walsh, who is currently on maternity leave.

Diane is played by Elizabeth Estensen, who retired from the soap in 2021.

The huge storm will be stretched across a week's worth of episodes and Jane added: "It's not just a storm that affects one small group it affects the entire village, so I think it will feel different.

She added: "I think one element in particular really will feel different… there is one element nobody has done and no other soap could do it apart from Emmerdale because of where we are… that’s a hint for you."

The official date for the 50th anniversary episodes have not been revealed, but the soap celebrates its big birthday on Sunday 16 October.

Emmerdale airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, at 8pm on ITV.
