Emmerdale star confirms Charles is capable of 'bad things' amid car crash horror
Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin), vicar of the Emmerdale village, always manages to find himself involved in some sort of drama.
Previously, he decided to visit serial killer Meena (Paige Sandhu) in prison, convinced she could change her ways with help from God and last year, he was caught up in the catastrophic storm that ended up taking Liv (Isobel Steele) and Harriet’s (Katherine Dow Blyton) lives.
Recently, life was peaceful for Charles as he moved in with Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker) but this is Emmerdale – of course that settled dynamic was never going to last long.
This time, it’s been interrupted by the arrival of Alex (Liam Boyle), Dawn’s (Olivia Bromley) drug-dealing ex who is now in a relationship with Charles’ daughter, Naomi (Karene Peter).
Over the past few weeks, Alex has managed to hide his true intentions, making out that he’s a changed man and wants to be in a happy relationship with Naomi.
However, this week, we discovered his plan to steal drugs from the surgery – something he’s cooked up with his real girlfriend, Clare.
And coming up, when Charles discovers Alex’s car full of drugs, drama ensues as the truth comes pouring out.
He tells Naomi everything and is shocked by her reaction, so he decides to go out for a drive to calm down.
As Charles heads off, it becomes apparent that Alex is at the side of the road on the phone and when he hangs up, he steps into the road – and a car slams straight into him.
Unaware of whether Charles was the person responsible for hitting Alex, could the character be capable of leaving Alex to die, knowing how much would change for his family and Naomi afterwards?
Discussing whether his character is capable of doing bad things if he was pushed, Kevin Mathurin recently told us:
‘I think once upon a time Charles wasn’t so much of a walk-over. With his faith he lets go and lets God take the wheel, so to speak, but every now and then Charles will take his wheel back and do what’s necessary, I guess. He hasn’t had to do that for a long time.
‘I think sometimes with the Charles character he always puts his parishioners first and he loves God and he loves his work within the community, but when it comes to his family his job and his faith sometimes will take second place to being a father and a partner. He will do whatever it takes to protect them.’
‘From the get-go Charles is devastated’, Kevin explained, reacting to the moment Charles realises he was right about Alex.
‘It hurts him that he was right, and he knew it all along that Alex wasn’t a repentant convict so to speak and he feels let down. More so that he invited him into his home and welcomed him into his family. He should have gone with his instincts from the beginning.’
Confronting his daughter, Naomi is in ‘total denial’ that her father is speaking the truth about her boyfriend.
‘Naomi doesn’t want to believe it’, Kevin said.
‘She thinks that because Charles has been against him all along that we were just waiting for any excuse to say that Charles was right and that the slightest problem that Alex has, we’ve blown it out of proportion. From Naomi’s point of view there must be a reason why he’s done it, so she’s not thinking straight about it at all.’
Pondering over the challenging situation with Naomi and Alex, Kevin gave some solid advice to his character and said:
‘As a parent myself I think sometimes you have to let your children make mistakes and see for themselves. You can guide them; you can support them from afar and probably suggest that maybe he’s not the one.
‘But if they can’t see it then all you’ve got to do is support and be prepared to cuddle – without saying “I told you so” later down the line!’.
