Emotional Kate Garraway clashes with MP on GMB over seriously ill Derek's NHS battle | The Sun

KATE Garraway became emotional as she clashed with an MP over seriously-ill husband Derek Draper's treatment in a private hospital.

Derek, 55, contracted Covid in 2020 and was left in a critical condition – and he has been fighting to overcome health problems ever since.

Kate, 55, has previously told how the father of her children would die in three days if he was left untreated in hospital.

On Thursday's Good Morning Britain, Kate became involved in a discussion with Shadow Attorney General, MP Emily Thornberry.

They were debating the use of private hospitals by the NHS in a climate where nurses have been on strike and hospitals are overflowing.

She denied this was the star of "privatisation" of the NHS.

Mum of two Kate became emotional when she explained how Derek had initially been treated in a private hospital – under the care of the NHS – during the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: "At that time, in effect, everything was nationalised.

"All private hospitals had to take NHS patients at the cost of an NHS patient.

"And he went in. But after a while the private hospitals said they couldn't make it pay and therefore it came to an end – it reverted back.

"So what was the argument against that?"

She told how he was then moved back to the NHS and said the "argument against" it would be that those paying for private healthcare "wouldn't be able to jump queues."

MP Thornberry said: "My priority is the NHS," to which Kate replied: "I know but that's the solution.

"If you are going to pay for some people to go to private hospitals what about doing it for everybody?"

Kate became quite emotional but the MP did not comment, instead claiming Labour had plans to recruit more staff to the NHS.

It came as doctors leaders are set to meet with the Health Secretary today to discuss concerns over pay.

One fan took to Twitter to comment: "Kate Garraway pretending to care, isn't her Derek with NHS so why she bashing labour idea…but then again I'm sure she can pay to for private care! #gmb."

A second put: "Well done Garraway, you managed to get Derek in at some point…#GMB."

One then quizzed: "Anyway has Kate gave us an update on Derek yet."

Meanwhile, Derek has been struggling to overcome health problems related to Covid for over two years now.

He is receiving specialist care and went back into hospital in July 2022 with wife Kate and children Darcey and Billy by his side.

He was diagnosed with Sepsis and a kidney infection.

Derek became the nation’s longest suffering patient after spending 13 months in hospital.
