Everything we know about Star Wars Andor series as Disney confirms release date

There is just over one month until the highly-anticipated new Star Wars series Andor launches on Disney+.

Fans were delighted when the trailer for the 12-part series landed at the Star Wars Celebration 2022 – with huge names including Diego Luna and Fiona Shaw announced as part of the cast.

Alongside news of a third Mandalorian series, plus the launch of Tales Of The Jedi, there is plenty for fans to look forward to from the Star Wars universe in the upcoming year.

However, with the launch of Andor drawing closer, Daily Star takes a look at everything we know about the series so far.

What is Andor about?

The series, as the name suggests, is about Cassian Andor, who Star Wars fans first met in critically acclaimed 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars story.

Spoiler alert – although Cassian Andor died alongside Jin Erso at the end of Rogue One, Andor will take viewers back into Cassian's origin story and how he helped to found the Rebel Alliance.

Billed as a 'rousing spy thriller', it will follow the Rebel Alliance's mission to restore hope to the Galaxy.

Who stars in the series?

Diego Luna will reprise his role as Cassian Andor for the new series. However, Diego revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he did not expect to be invited back for an entire series after making Rogue One, saying: "I thought it was going to be a one-time thing in my life, and I shared it with my kids, and I saw it. I was ready to move on.

"Then I was invited to [return for the show], and it made complete sense. I had so much more to say and do with this role."

He added: "I just wanted to explore many things that I thought about while I was shooting that a film would never allow you to explore."

As well as Diego Luna, the series will also feature huge Hollywood names including Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller and Genevieve O'Reilly.

Where does Andor sit in the Star Wars timeline?

Andor is set five years before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars story.

Actress Fiona Shaw, who plays Maarva in the TV series, told Empire that "[In the show] the Empire is taking over" with Andor focusing on the fight to bring down the Empire at the height of its powers.

Also speaking to Empire Magazine about the new series, leading actor Diego Luna, said it is "insanely ambitious, dark and real," describing it as "amazing."

How is it different to other Star Wars series?

Although it is the same universe as the films and TV series including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor will not utilise technology used on recent productions called "The Volume."

The Volume was used on The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and is a gigantic video wall that projects ultra-HD virtual locations, which enables the performers to experience a sense of realistic environments on set.

However, Andor creator Tony Gilroy revealed to TV Line that the Volume "does not lend itself to the production" due to the large scale cast that the series has.

He said: "It is just on a massively epic scale, and people would be running off the set all the time".

Tony added: "I think if we have this conversation at the end of the show, it will be different, because the width and breadth and visual ambition and travelling ambition of the show is huge. It just didn't lend itself to that kind of production."

When will it air and how can I watch?

Andor was originally intended to launch on August 31, 2022.

However, the air date has been pushed back for a further month – with the new premiere confirmed for September 21, 2022.

Fans will be able to enjoy the first three episodes of the series on its launch day, with the remaining instalments of the 12-episode run available weekly on streaming service Disney+.

If you cannot wait until then, there are also plenty of Star Wars series including The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Bad Batch, The Book Of Boba Fett and Star Wars: Visions to enjoy before Andor launches.
