Firefly Lane took viewers by storm after season two landed on Netflix on Friday with its growing fan base eager to see more of Kate Mularkey (played by Sarah Chalke) and Tully Hart’s (Katherine Heigl) friendship. However as the two drifted apart, Kate received a gut-wrenching diagnosis, which the actress reflected on and opened up about.

Season two finally detailed the unexplained rift which saw the childhood best friends distance themselves from each other.

Although Kate and Tully had different upbringings, the two connected as children and agreed to do life together in a friendship which went into adulthood.

The series told their story as they supported each other through career highs and lows, family turmoil and painfully relatable heartbreaks.

However, in the final moments of season two, part one the friends were no longer speaking and Kate needed Tully more than ever.

Although their bond seemed unbreakable, the end of their friendship was solidified when Kate told Tully she was no longer welcome at her father’s funeral.

It was revealed Tully was involved in a car accident with Kate’s daughter Marah (Yael Yurman) who was also in the car.

The incident was a result of Tully’s drunk driving, which she was later arrested for.

Although Tully apologised profusely, Kate told Tully that their friendship is over.

As their friendship drifted, the women focused on their lives until Kate’s was brought to a gut-wrenching halt when she was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer.

After being told she needed to start treatment immediately was motivated to reach out to Tully.

During the final moments of the episode, Kate pounded on Tully’s door but to no avail.

Little did she know, Tully had just left for Antarctica where she recently accepted a new job, working on a global warming documentary.

Speaking on the emotional ending, actress Sarah Chalke shared: “I had read the book as soon as I got the part, so it was something that I knew was coming.

“Then when I read the script, it made me cry, it was really beautifully written obviously, I had some trepidation about shooting it, it was quite an emotional day.

“The director was Michael Spiller, who I’ve known for a few decades, he was one of our favourite Scrubs directors.

“He knew at that point that his wish was to have The Scientist by Coldplay play through the whole sequence at the end.”

Sarah continued: “So as we were doing all the scenes, walking down the street, he was playing the song, and then he ended up getting the song [cleared], which was amazing as it fit so beautifully for that whole scene.

“But yes, it was really, really tough. Nobody is not touched by cancer in their family.

“I lost my grandmother and my aunt, lots of crew members have shared their stories with me, so it was quite an emotional, moving experience,” she added to Deadline.

Fans will have to wait for the release of part two, to find out if Sarah and Tully will find their way back to each other.
