All Creatures Great and Small’s Helen star on favourite rewritten scenes

All Creatures Great and Small: Shenton shares ‘insight’

All Creatures Great and Small star Rachel Shenton, who plays Helen Herriot in the Channel 5 drama, has opened up about filming a confrontation scene during series three.

Delivering a blistering speech to a farmer, the character fumed: “My husband is not a liar, in fact, he is probably one of the best people you are likely to meet.

“I will have my say if you don’t mind. Even when he makes mistakes, James [Herriot] is nothing but honest. Everything he does is about helping other people and if you knew him like I do you’d know he would never lie.”

She continued: “Here’s the truth of it, James worked hard and he’s the one who got them signed up to your TB testing scheme. Without him, none of them would have agreed to it, not one.

“You strike him off now, and you will lose all of them – can promise you that!”

Speaking on the Masterpiece podcast about the tense scene, Rachel said: “Oh I love that scene, it’s probably one of my favourite scenes of the season.

“I really loved the wedding but I loved that [scene] so much,” she exclaimed.

Rachel revealed: “It got rewritten the day before and I remember being like, ‘Oh my goodness’ but it was so much better.

“You don’t mind a later rewrite when it is better and it was great!”

Rachel said what she adored about that impassioned scene was that Helen was fighting for her and James’ (played by Nicholas Ralph) life.

“I know it sounds dramatic but she knows the threat now and knows if he is not there what’s going to happen,” Rachel stressed.

“She was in fight or flight and she was fiercely protective and I love that – I think that is what she was fighting for,” Rachel said.

James ultimately does decide to enlist in the army and tells his wife he could not forgive himself if he did nothing during the Second World War.

The war is set to influence events in the upcoming fourth season of All Creatures Great and Small.

A release date for the new series is yet to be announced, but it is understood it will land on Channel 5 this autumn.

All Creatures Great and Small episodes are available to watch on My5.
