Russel T Davies on ‘thrill’ of coming back to Doctor Who

Later this year, fans of the long-running BBC sci-fi drama will see Indira Varma join the new cast of Doctor Who.

Speaking of joining the cast, the actress said: “I’m thrilled to be in Doctor Who and particularly excited to be crossing cosmic paths with Ncuti, as the Doctor, and look forward to creating interplanetary mischief with him.

“I loved playing Suzie Costello for Russell T Davies in Torchwood so am thrilled to be entering this world again.”

Showrunner Russell T Davies is returning to the BBC sci-fi drama after over a decade after he left back in 2010.

Touching on Indira joining the show, Russell hinted her character is set to cause a stir.

He said: “’I’m overjoyed to be reunited with Indira after our Torchwood days, and this part is truly spectacular!

“A whole new audience will be hiding behind the settee when the Duchess unleashes her terror.’”

In November, viewers will get to see a new Time Lord after saying goodbye to Jodie Whittaker, who left the role after three seasons, last year.

Instead, fans will welcome Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa as the new doctor for the 14th series.

However, people will have to wait a little while to see Ncuti make his debut as the 15th doctor as the series finale last year saw Jodie regenerate into David Tennant.

David played the famous Time Lord back in 2005 and stayed in the role for three years before leaving in 2008.

The BBC has since confirmed that the 52-year-old will only be reprising his role for a short while to mark the show’s 60th anniversary.

Joining him will be Catherine Tate as his former companion Donna Noble for the three episodes.

It won’t be until the end of the year that people will see Ncuti as the 15th doctor, after David’s special episodes.

Speaking about getting the role, the 30-yer-old said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling.

“A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.

“This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.

“I will endeavour my utmost to do the same.”
